At first it didn't increase Peter's strenght, but then it's been established that the symbiote greatly boosts the host's physical abilities.

Initially when Peter had the symbiote it only served him, not enhance his abilities... The Suit used to take Peter out at night as he slept, and showed as much raw ability as he showed. It was only when the symbiote had turned against Peter that it began to enhance it's hosts abilities. So, there is no evidence it did anything for him.
