Because they both fight on both sides. They were originally as a villain. When fighting on the heroes side they are anti hero.

Actually, Magneto was fighting to keep his people from being annihilated, I don't think of that as a villainous action...
He was originally a villain at the beginning. Therefore he’s not a villain anymore after his redemption.
Well, initially he thought mutant survival was dependent on human removal, not acceptance. But, I don't think he was ever really calling for more than any species seeking survival.
@Dr. Nice You know, come to think of it I can’t think of any times that he’s hurt civilians.
No... Not really his style. The Acolytes and BOEM however, have.
Hi, number one Magneto fangirl here. Magneto was never really a villain. His only truly despicable actions were in the original X-Men movie trilogy. His sole goal was to liberate his people from the oppressive class. I don't see that as a bad thing.
Fun fact murdering innocent people is bad so magneto is a villain
There was a particular thing about the first movie of the X-Men, a thing that really paints Magneto in a different light. He didn’t use the device which he forced Rogue to activate to kill the world leaders, instead he intended to turn them into Mutants. But I doubt he would have truly used the device had he known what happened to that governor he turned into a Mutant. Also his back story in general makes sense, he’s not a true villain, he’s a man who was hurt in various ways by humans that made him loathe them. He was Jewish for starters, born in Germany during the Holocaust and when he won a javelin contest, he was punished because of his Jewish faith. His family fled to Poland where his parents would end up being shot and killed by Nazis. He would later be sent to the worst Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz. There he would see thousands of others die. Eventually when he was freed, he would move to the USSR with his wife and have a baby. He would lose his job and out of frustration use his powers to kill his cruel boss. This would result in the KGB coming after him and his family, leading to his child’s death, his wife fearing him, and the KGB agents dying after they beat him up. All of his life was miserable, all of his life he was chased by humans trying to kill him. Anyone who had been through what he had would’ve felt like he did, and truthfully all he wants was the best for Mutants. Though the way he wanted it was a bit too far, he still had some form of friendship with a fellow Mutant who hoped one day Magneto would come to realize that coexistence could happen. And in some points of his story, he joins Xavier and the X-Men to see things from Xavier’s perspective.
@Nickj38 When exactly has he murdered innocent people? I really can’t think of a single time in the comics that he ever hurt any civilians.
I remember he sank a sub in self-defense after it attacked him... Those sailors drown or suffocated. Not innocent. He caused an electromagnetic pulse that turned the planet powerless, blackout. Charles theorized a lot of people died, but we don't know... But, all he was trying to do was return to Earth.
What do you think?
