Two men were sat in a car, both completely silent. One was staring out of the window, deep in thought, and the other was quietly driving the car. They drove for minutes through New York City, not stopping. After all, they had a job and couldn’t stop for any reason.
It was a quiet and dark night in the city, and there were very few people out in the streets. Occasionally a person or two was seen, but for the most part, this night was a perfect one to assassinate someone. Fewer witnesses, fewer deaths necessary, and of course a less chance of getting busted by someone.
The man that was deep in thought suddenly decided to break the silence.
“Hey, uh, so who exactly is our target?” he asked the man driving.
The driver didn’t turn at all. “I know that it’s your first day doing this, Harry. But you gotta remember this stuff. I mean, what we do, it’s a serious matter.”
“Oh. Right. Sorry…” The passenger went quiet.
Another second passed before the driver answered. “It’s some… kid. They call her Jubilee.”
“Kid? I don’t know if I’m really comfortable killing a kid.”
At this, the driver laughed. “You have to get tougher if you want to survive this career. But, luckily for you, she’s not just a random kid, Harry. She’s a killer. Robbed a bunch of people, too.”
“Oh.” Harry relaxed slightly. But only slightly. “I… suppose that helps.”
Another minute of silence followed before the two men neared their destination. They loaded their guns and got ready to step out. But before that happened, Harry stopped his hand from opening the door.
“Hey, why exactly do they call her Jubilee?” At this, the driver stopped opening the door as well and turned around to face Harry.
“Because,” he said with a straight face. “When she kills you, the last thing you see is the flash of firing bullets. Those few survivors say it’s like a fireworks display.”
He then finished opening the door and got out of the car, leaving Harry to simply sit there and take everything in. He was regretting joining this gang. He could be living a normal life, but instead, he was going to almost certainly die to a little girl.
They made their way down an alley, guns cocked and ready. They moved swiftly yet quietly. They searched and searched for their target, which they had been told was living in this narrow alleyway. The two men eventually reached the end of the slim passage without finding anything.
“Damn it, there’s nothing here,” Harry said, putting his arms down to his sides. “I think they lied to us.”
The other man put his gun down also, clearly angered. “Yeah. The tip must’ve been bull****. Let’s get out of here, and once we get back, I’m gonna have to give someone a piece of my mind. Wasting our time like this…”
Harry, who was the one in the back, started to walk back to the car.
“This whole job was a bust,” he said under his breath, exasperated.
But as he took another step, a voice pierced through the darkness. “I wouldn’t be too sure about that,” it said.
Harry stumbled backward, knocking into the man behind him. They almost fell but caught themselves. In the low light of the moon, a face could be barely seen. It was the face of a girl, and it was smiling.
Before either of them could do or say anything, the girl fired the two guns she had in her hands, which instantly killed the two men. Blood spattered on Jubilee’s black overcoat, but she didn’t wipe it off.
As the men lay on the ground, dying and bleeding, all they could think was “The last thing we see really is the guns firing…”
Jubilee stood over the two dead bodies, staring at them. She had killed many, just like these people. At this point, she felt no remorse. At this point, she didn’t even feel anything. She turned and began to walk away, and out of the alley.
Someone had discovered this place too. She didn’t know how; it was extremely hidden and out of the way. And she’d been so careful too, not letting anyone see or follow her… But none of that mattered. Whatever the case, she had to move again.
She didn’t really know where to go next, but she couldn’t stay here. If a bigger gang found out about this place, she’d be dead in days. Many, many, many people wanted her dead. And she knew that they would be swift to act once they got word of her location.
She would like to go somewhere nice, like an actual apartment, but that was out of the question. Too many liabilities, and a far too high chance of it ending in her death. So, next on her list of things to do was to find somewhere she could camp out in until she was found once more, at which point she’d have to repeat this entire process.
But she’d have to make it out of this alley first, which now looked like it would be a little more difficult, as now a large man was stood in front of the opening to the street. She could only see his silhouette, but that was menacing enough.
The man was enormous, most likely over 7 feet, and he was almost as wide as the passage itself. His face wasn’t visible, but she could feel his eyes on her. The man made no attempt to move towards her, but Jubilee immediately pulled her guns out and pointed them at him instinctually.
“Who the hell are you?” she questioned, with a voice as steady as she could muster. Her fingers were poised and ready to fire. “And why are you here?”
The man smiled slightly and lifted his face enough that the moonlight showed his facial features. His eyes were black, so black that they almost seemed lifeless, and his skin was pale like he’d been not fed or seen sunlight for a week. But his body was so large that him being malnourished was out of the question.
He said nothing, only stared, smiling quietly. Jubilee was extremely freaked out and was about to fire when she gave the man one last chance to say something to save himself.
“I killed the other guys. I won’t hesitate to kill you if you don’t say anything.” She swallowed. There was something… off about this guy. But she couldn’t fully understand what it was.
She waited for a second before her finger curled around the trigger and began to press down. But the man finally spoke.
“I have no connection to the men you encountered. And, I wouldn’t shoot if I were you,” he said, still not moving.
“Why not?” Jubilee said, not moving her fingers away from the triggers, but not firing either.
“Because it wouldn’t end well for you.” He shifted slightly, causing Jubilee to slightly step back. “My name is not important for now. But I am here to give you a job.”
“Job?” So he’s a part of a gang? “I don’t do jobs. Especially not for criminals.”
“Criminals? Aren’t you one as well? Or do you see yourself as Daredevil, helping people? Because you certainly have no shame in killing people.” This was one of the things that Jubilee herself was unsure of. In fact, this almost made her start to question this. But then she stopped herself.
He’s just playing mind games. He’s trying to get me scared. Jubilee realized. I should shoot him now, and not hesitate. And that’s what she did. She fired, directly at the man.
But as she did so, he suddenly wasn’t there anymore. He was behind her, which was impossible because this alley was far too narrow for him to go around her. Before she could react, an immense pain shot through Jubilee’s entire body.
She fell and felt her back screaming in agony. There was blood everywhere, and her coat was ripped in the back, exposing her wounds to the air. She couldn’t move for a second. She just stayed there, not budging.
She could sense the man getting ready to attack again. He must have a knife, she reasoned. So she turned over, and started to shoot, trying to either hit the man or knock the weapon out of his hands.
Her body wasn’t hurting any less than before, but she forced her way through the torture. She fired, but the man had moved again. But this time, she didn’t feel a new pain. In fact, she didn’t even know where the man was. He’d simply disappeared.
She slowly got up and looked around. He was nowhere to be seen. No human could move that fast, but somehow he had. The very air itself seemed to say, “Wrong choice.”
She would be wondering where the man went, but her wounds took over any other thought she had. She needed to treat it as soon as possible, or she’d die.
The next minutes were a blur to Jubilee. She remembered a lot of pain, crying, and vomiting at least once. Eventually, she awoke, in a completely different alley. It was now day, the sun shining down on her surroundings. On the ground was blood, lots of it. She assumed it was hers.
Her back still hurt immensely, but less so than the previous night. The smell was terrible, and she dry heaved a few times. She felt like a corpse, dehydrated, and laying on the ground.
A look around told her that the alley she was in was non-descript and unrecognizable. She had definitely never been here before. She got up, at this point numb to the pain.
“****, what the hell…” She croaked. She unsteadily walked towards the opening of the alley and saw a street lined with shops. It was nearly empty, only a few people walking around. But some stores seemed to be open.
She didn’t recognize the place, but she stumbled over to a nearby open door. As she stepped into the store, she pulled a gun out and pointed it at the man behind the counter. She wasn’t fully aware of what happened next, but the man ended up dead and she had some food and water.
Jubilee slowly got her body back to a healthy state. She also found a large grey coat, which she used to replace the black one that was torn. She still had blood all over her back, but she couldn’t do anything about that for now.
Once she was back to relatively normal, she began to think about the man who had attacked her. She hadn’t seen much of him, and barely remembered the events that had occurred. She did remember that he had offered her a job, but she’d shot at him before even hearing what it was.
And… she remembered that he’d gotten into her head, talking about how she was a criminal. She really, really, didn’t want to be one, but that’s all she could do. Being a Chinese immigrant, there wasn’t much of an option.
Then she thought about how she needed more protection if she wanted to survive another attack. Maybe, she thought. Maybe, I should have taken his offer…
Those thoughts were shaken out of her head a second later, but she wasn’t fully sure that she did the right thing. If I joined, I’d have protection from other gangs, and thus I’d be safer… No, I don’t want to commit more crimes than I have to. Then again… But that line of thoughts was cut off, with the arrival of a man.
This man wasn’t as terrifying as the man from last night, but he still scared Jubilee. He was dressed in all black, and held a single gun out, pointed towards her. She quickly stood, pulling her own guns out. But she was sure that if she’d barely survived the other guy, this man would kill her instantly.
And she knew this because Jubilee recognized him. In fact, almost every person in the country knew him. Maybe everyone in the world. He was famous and shot fear into the minds of every criminal. Because the man that was standing in the doorway was…
The Spider.
