So they finally gave my boy another series.
The comic started with Namor in prison being abused by the guards. He has abdicated the throne and surrendered himself for all his crimes over the years. He could escape at any time but is choosing not to or even fighting back against the guards as part of a self punishment.
We then get a flashback to his childhood where we see a group of kids pretend to befriend him and take him to a brine pool in a forbidden zone. The kids attempt to push him in but he easily throws them off of him. He's grabbed by a giant sea creature and the other kids leave him for dead.
Back in the present a mercenary group including King Crab and Manowar sent by Attuma attack the prison and attempt to kill Namor. He manages to defeat them all and save the guards despite being weak but is poisoned by pufferfish venom which the mercenaries have covered their weapons in. Namor collapses in his cell but wakes up in the hospital.
Stingray is there and revealed he saved Namor with Atlantean antivenom he keeps on him at all times. He was already on his way to see Namor to inform him of what's going on under the sea. After Namor abdicated the throne, the seven seas were divided again for the first time since ancient Atlantis and each is now run by a warlord. Attuma is the only known one at the moment. A civil war has now broken out to see who will take Namor's throne. Stingray has tried to get the U.N. to step in a provide aid for the innocents caught in the war but they are refusing to commit due to past conflicts. They are more concerned with all the dead bodies blocking trade routes and are making weapons just in case the eventual winner of the tries to invade the surface. Some have even proposed to revoke Atlanteans citizenship and they will be classified as wildlife similar to other sea creatures. Namor insists he wants nothing to do with it and wants to go back to prison as he feels he only make things worse for his people. He says that being on the throne and having that power always brings out the worse in him.
We return to the flashback and Namor bursts in the classroom with the corpse of the sea creature that grabbed him. He confronts the leader of his bullies, Chalmers and tells him it's his fault that creature is dead. Chalmers calls him a freak and Namor responds that he is his eventual king and his aggression will not go unpunished. Namor says he will not dirty his hands and orders the other children to do it for him. Suddenly Chalmers is hit by a huge punch.
Back in the present, Stingray tells Namor if he truly wants to atone for his past he needs to save his people. While he has gotten them into numerous conflicts this is a much greater threat as it may result in the eradication of Atlanteans. Namor finally agrees and is told by Stingray that he has 4 days to stop the war before the U.N. steps in. The Comic ends going back to the flashback where all the other kids begin attacking Chalmers and his crew, as he begs Namor for mercy who simply smiles and watches. Present day Namor then dives into the ocean and head towards the first warlord.
My thoughts: I'm hyped, I love this premise definitely more intriguing than his last series which was overall disappointing. Hopefully it delivers on the premise it's presented. Art was great, dialog was great and Namor's inner monologue is always a great companion to the comic.
You did a good job, Jason Aaron. Keep it up 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
