Knights of X is Tini Howards follow up to Excalibur in the Destiny of X era, and so far, things are not looking peachy for that book.
Excalibur was an OK book, I appreciated Tini Howard using Gambit, because frankly he's been fairly underused since Dawn of X, but other than that, it really wasn't amazing in any way. I thought that there were plenty of good scenes scattered throughout it, but the story was kind of funky and Howard had a pretty annoying habit of writing Gambit as a little more than a cat dad.
But, with the big cliffhanger at the end of the series, Tini Howard had to come back, this time with a new series. And, what's more, she's already somebody will die in issue 3, and with the book being set in otherworld, where you can't comeback as yourself if you do die there, this poses a serious threat for fans of Gambit, especially with the painful amount of subjective evidences that point to Gambit being the victim of Howard's cruelty:
1) Rogue's hellfire gala variant for Knights of X #3
Personally, I think this cover is concerning for multiple reasons. The first being that Rogue being on the cover may suggest a cameo appearance of her in the issue, as she isn't supposed to be apart of the cast for Knights of X. One reason why she may have a cameo appearance: her husband passed away. Second, Rogue's outfit and environment are very somber looking, not too much like the other gala variants we've seen. Again, supporting the possibility that maybe, her loving husband isn't fairing so well.
2) Gambit's new solo was just postponed to June 22 (😭), the same date that Knights of X #3 is coming out. I know this doesn't mean much, as several series have been getting delated lately, but it may be a decision made to complement severe drama happening to Gambit in the modern timeline.
3) Destiny's prophesy in X-Men #9 (I freaking hate Destiny sometimes)
Throughout the scene, Destiny and Rogue were arguing about Remy, Destiny making sure that Rogue knows how much she hates him. Then she hits Rogue with this, saying that she will "come to see things [her] way". Rogue and Irene haven't really agreed on much since Rogue joined the X-Men, and I think that it would take quite a hit to Rogue for that to change.
4) New knights of X cover for July just released. Guess who's not on the cover 😑
Honestly, I think that my biggest concern isn't that Howard kills Remy, but rather that she does end up reviving Remy from otherworld and gets to completely redesign his entire character and inevitably screw up his and Rogue's marriage. I do not trust Tini Howard to do justice by my boy if she does end up getting to rewrite him and change his whole character.
What do you think? Do you think that Marvel will let Howard do this to a fan favorite like Gambit, or maybe this is all just us Gambit fans being paranoid.
