While the NYPD booked the unconscious Namor, a call came in from a subway dispatcher reporting “a flood and a wreck at 5th Street.” With Betty Dean’s guarantee, Namor was quietly released to help. He sprinted to 5th Street, dove into the subway entrance, righted an overturned car, and pulled trapped passengers to safety.
Following the torrent, Namor discovered the water was entering through a man-made breach. He swam through a narrow conduit into a long tunnel, where a gang of “sandhogs” was drilling through bedrock as part of a bank-robbery scheme. Smashing through a steel door, Namor reached a hidden vault beneath the Treasury building, burst in on the thieves, and subdued the gang, exposing that the 5th Street flood and wreck had been created to divert attention during the heist.[1]
