Agent Brand[src]

Abigail "Brand" Thanriaguiaxus is a half-alien half-human mutant agent of S.W.O.R.D., and frequent begrudging ally of Earth's X-Men.

History

Abigail was born and raised on the planet Axus[8] to an extraterrestrial father and a woman from Earth, from whom she inherited the X-Gene.[14][7] She also had a half-brother named Lothithanriaxiaxus, who was a green, furry alien and a ne'er-do-well.[15]

At some point, Brand became a special agent of the United States Government before joining S.W.O.R.D., a subdivision of S.H.I.E.L.D., charged with defending the Earth from extraterrestrial threats.[2] She was given the codename "Brand" due to her mutant power,[14][8] and had earned a full command by the age of 28.[16]

Breakworld[]

Brand encountered the alien Ord in her capacity as a S.W.O.R.D. agent, who was convinced that a mutant from Earth was destined to destroy his planet. In order to avoid an interplanetary war, Brand acquiesced to Ord's plan to avert the destruction of his world by allowing him to create a cure for the mutant "condition".[17] It was later learned the mutant prophesied to destroy Breakworld was Colossus. After her involvement in this plan became known to the X-Men Brand faced a board of inquiry to face charges of misconduct. She defended her actions on the grounds that averting interplanetary warfare was a responsibility so great as to justify courses of action that would otherwise be considered immoral or illegal.[18]

Despite their past differences, she attempted to work with the X-Men to find a solution to the crisis. In an attempt to draw Breakworld's forces away from the Earth, Brand had the X-Men, Ord, and Ord's ally Danger teleported aboard a S.W.O.R.D. starship and traveled to the Breakworld itself. Ord was able to contact his homeworld to alert them of Colossus' location, unaware that this was all part of Brand's plan. However, Breakworld forces caught up with the S.W.O.R.D. vessel before Brand had predicted they would, forcing the X-Men and the S.W.O.R.D. strike team to use the ship's escape pods to finish their journey to the Breakworld. Once on the surface, Brand and the X-Men made the last-ditch assault on the Breakworld's doomsday device before it could be fired at Earth. Brand dove into the path of a laser blast meant for Beast and was wounded.[19]

After the Breakworld mission ended, Brand offered Dr. Henry McCoy a job with S.W.O.R.D., needing someone who would question her actions. Brand was attracted to McCoy. She referred to herself as his Xenophiliac Experimentation Partner.[14]

Despite the antagonistic relationship she and Nick Fury demonstrated toward each other, she was considered a Nick Fury loyalist by Fury's replacement at S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill. Brand made no effort to hide her dislike for Hill.[20]

Secret Invasion[]

During the Skrull Invasion, a Skrull posing as Dum-Dum Dugan destroyed The Peak, stranding Brand and countless other agents in space inside personal life support systems.[21] Brand then broke into one of the Skrull armada's ships[16][22] and witnessed the destruction Skrulls were causing on Earth. She managed to free their prisoner, Mister Fantastic, who she took to the Savage Land. There, Richards used a device which revealed that all of the "Earth heroes" who had crash-landed there were actually brainwashed Skrulls.[23]

After the Invasion[]

Beta Ray Bill came to Brand seeking information on the whereabouts of Galactus. Brand gave Bill the information but stressed that the World-Eater could never find out who gave him the information lest Galactus seek revenge on Earth.[24]

Abigail also recruited Jessica Drew into S.W.O.R.D. On Jessica's first mission, Brand sent her to Madripoor as well as giving her an alien detector.[25]

No Aliens Allowed[]

Henry Peter Gyrich managed to take several notable aliens into custody such as Noh-Varr, Adam X, Jazinda, Karolina Dean, and Hepzibah as part of his effort to remove aliens from Earth, including Brand and Lockheed themselves. When S.W.O.R.D. itself was invaded by the brutal alien race called the Drenx, Brand, McCoy, Lockheed, and their ally Death's Head managed to defeat them, reversing Gyrich's actions and getting him dismissed from the organization.[26]

Avengers vs. X-Men[]

Abigail helped give missions to Cyclops' team.[27] During the war between the Avengers and the X-Men Abigail sided with the Avengers, via Hank. When the war was over, however, she pretended to help the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. track down Cyclops' X-Men, and instead helped Magneto, making sure he knew if there was anyone coming for him. She also revealed she was a mutant herself and wanted children with Beast one day.[7]

X-Men: Legacy[]

Soon after that, Abigail was called upon by Legion to help him fight a monster that had escaped his mind. During the battle, to Beast's horror, Abigail Brand was incinerated right in front of their eyes. Legion later resurrected her and everyone else that died in the battle at the cost of his own life.[28]

Infinity[]

When Thanos invaded Earth, S.W.O.R.D. was held hostage and occupied. In desperation, Brand sent the Guardians of the Galaxy a request of help. This worked and Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, and Gamora helped Brand free the station from intruders and restore vital defense systems. They were assisted by the help of Angela, a mysterious warrior of uncertain origins.[29]

Alpha Flight[]

Brand as part of Alpha Flight

When Alpha Flight replaced S.W.O.R.D. as Earth's first line of defense, Abigail became lieutenant commander of its low-orbit space station, working directly under Captain Marvel. While Abigail was openly hostile towards Carol, it was revealed by Puck that Brand had turned down the role of commander.[4]

Despite a rough start, Abigail stayed by Carol's side through the second superhuman civil war,[30][31] the Chitauri invasion during Hydra's takeover of the country,[32] and countless other adventures. When Carol's lineage as a Kree became public, Carol decided it was best to step down as Commander of Alpha Flight and asked Brand to take over, which she reluctantly accepted.[33]

It was also around this time that Abigail joined the mutant-only nation of Krakoa.[34]

Empyre[]

After the threat of Empyre, Brand had her last drop and realized that Alpha Flight simply didn't work, since no one would warn them whenever they faced alien threats. After making a scene with Carol at Hulkling and Wiccan's space wedding she said she quit the Space Program.[35] She then returned to her role as commander of S.W.O.R.D., now affiliated with the nation of Krakoa with Magneto as their council liaison. In spite of this she made it clear that she took the job to protect the world and not just its mutant population.[3]

The Last Annihilation[]

In an attempt to secure the Sol system's alliance with the Kree-Skrull empire, she intercepted a distress signal from the Emperor. She had implanted cameras onto the construction site in order to be ready to save the Emperor at any moment so he would be indebted even after he found out that she was covering up the death of his mother-in-law.[36]

X-Men: Red[]

After disposing of Henry Gyrich, Abigail secretly joined the anti-mutant organization Orchis and allied herself with Orbis Stellaris as part of her plan to make S.W.O.R.D. and the Sol System the center of the cosmic stage. As part of her plan she attempted to incite a cosmic conflict by having Shi'ar Empress Xandra assassinated, utilize the Mysterium metal to elevate Sol's importance and later establish a universe-wide peace.[37] She had expected Arakko's relocation to Mars, and sought to increase her influence on the new nation by having Vulcan involved before unleashing him on the Galactic Council,[38] but she was among those who were killed during Uranos' attack on the planet.[11] While checking her files following her resurrection by the Five, Cable and Wiz Kid were able to access the files and discover her alliance with Orchis and her ulterior plans, prompting Cable to formulate his own plan to stop her.[39] Shortly after, her treachery would also be uncovered by Sunspot, who would bribe Brand's confidant and subordinate Mentallo into revealing her schemes. However, Brand would escape before facing the consequences of her actions, using technology stolen from Cable to teleport to an unknown location on Arakko.[1]

Attributes

Powers

Abigail is a Mutant[7]/Alien hybrid with following powers:

  • Heat Generation: Her mutant power is the ability to generate heat with her hands.[8][13] The upper level of the temperature she can generate is unknown, but she can ignite a person by touching them[14] and keep herself and at least one more person alive at -100 °C temperature for a prolonged time.[40] When she uses power her hands starts to glow, the glow have been variously depicted as blue[14][8], red[41][7] and green.[42] Sometime the glow resembles flames[14][7] and she was even called a contact pyrokinetic.[41] Her ability to "brand" surfaces with this power is the origin of her codename.[14][8]
  • Regeneration: Possibly due to her half-alien genetics Brand can heal from most injuries faster than a common human,[13] including surviving blasts to the torso from a laser cannon.[citation needed]

Abilities

  • S.W.O.R.D. Field Agent Training: First rank armed/unarmed combatant.[41]
  • Multilingualism: Her tongue has the ability to shape alien languages that humans are unable to make. For example, she was able to fluently communicate with Lockheed in his native tongue,[15] a fact that clearly surprised her crew.[citation needed] She also spoke the Skrull and Kree languages, though she was more accomplished with the Kree language than with that of the Skrulls. Brand stated that she could write a book in Kree, but believed she sounded like a 'drunken infant' in comparison when speaking the Skrull language.[43] She is also able to speak Galactic Basic, Merchant-Slang Majesdanian and Shi'ar Prime.[44]

Paraphernalia

Weapons

  • Various high-powered laser guns.

Notes

  • Brand has a tattoo on each biceps; one reads "Grace", the other "Anna".[45] The significance of these tattoos has yet to be revealed.
  • When Beast referred to himself as a "blue furry monster", Brand replied "so was my father";[14] however, she has also called her father a "green-furred alien",[46] which more closely matches the appearance of her paternal half-brother.[15]
