Abombi was an ancient city inhabited by an elder race, until they abandoned it, at its height, eons ago.[1]
Hyborian Age[]
During the Hyborian Age, it became a tribal kingdom on the Black Coast, within the Second Belt of the Black Kingdoms.[2]
Bêlit, Conan, and the Black Corsairs sailed past the deserted city on occasion.
At some point, an inland chief cast his son Ajaga out of his tribe after a failed coup. With his loyalists, he headed to Abombi, where he declared himself king of the city. He climbed the highest peak over Abombi and prayed to the spirits. A thick mist came and formed a shifting mask around Ajaga, eventually coming to be shaped like a panther's head. Ajaga was retrieved unconscious, showing no sign of life, but returned to life hours later as a serpent crawled upon his body. Ajaga was now master over the beasts of the jungle, the "Beast-King of Abombi", and attracted many ambitious men exiled from their own tribes, including two parricide brothers.
All neighboring tribes were eventually forced to pay tribute or to flee inland. Ajaga took a bride within each of the conquered tribes, intending to found a new tribe, ruled by his dynasty.
Ombassa, the chieftain of the Watambis (who paid tribute to no one but Bêlit) refused and defied Ajaga. The incessant attacks by the beasts of the jungles eventually annihilated the Watambis' morale. Following the abduction of Nyami, the chieftain's daughter, they surrendered. Although, Ajaga kept Nyami as hostage and bride.[1]
Abombi was sacked by Bêlit and Conan.[3]Residents
