History

Agatha Harkness was a centuries-old witch who lived with her partner Sara at the Abbey.

Agatha first arrived at the Abbey on January 2nd, 1695, having sensed a child of magic, Hunter who was barely two months. Agatha stayed and fell in love with Sara, the two of them raising the Hunter together. After their deaths in 1712, the two women stayed together, keeping each other company for over three centuries. At some point in the late 20th century they were attacked by the Salem Seven, Agatha's grandchildren by Nicholas Scratch who felt that Agatha had betrayed witchkind by choosing to live among the humans and intended to drag her over to New Salem by force. Wolverine, who was staying at the Abbey at the time, helped the women keep the Salem Seven at bay long enough for Agatha to cast a banishing spell against them.[1]

When Sara's sister Lilith was brought back to life, and the Prophecy of the Midnight Suns heralded the return of Chthon, Sara assembled the new Midnight Suns against this threat, consisting of Blade, Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), Magik, Nico Minoru, and Scarlet Witch. As the team was settling in training for the fight to come, Wanda was eager to test her magic and explore the Abbey grounds, with Agatha acting as her guide. However, several areas of the Abbey grounds have been sealed using Words of Power accessible only to the descendants of the Blood and protected by the Moon Seals. Wanda's experiments with those proved disastrous, as one of the Moon Seals explored and vaporized Agatha without a trace. Though Wanda was not directly at fault, Sara the Caretaker still sent her away from the Abbey to Doctor Strange.[1]

After her death, Agatha's spirit lingered at the Abbey, though she could not be directly perceived by anyone. This lasted until the Hunter was brought back to life to face their mother once again. At their first night back amongst the living, the Hunter came to pay respects at Agatha's shrine where a commemorative statue of her with Ebony has been erected. Agatha revealed herself to the Hunter, who was able to fully see and hear her spirit. Agatha asked the Hunter to keep her state a secret from others staying at the Abbey and to give Sara time to grieve, although Doctor Strange was able to figure it out on his own. The Hunter joined the Midnight Suns and the Avengers in a campaign to thwart Lilith's plans, while Agatha became their guardian, providing the Hunter with words of wisdom and assisting in their exploration of the Abbey grounds and uncovering of their many mysteries.[1]

When Wanda finally returned to the Abbey and went to Agatha's shrine, she discovered that due to their connection she could hear but not see her. Agatha asked Wanda and Hunter to perform the Grey Seneschal ritual of Sara's own making. The ritual would permanently bind Agatha's spirit to the Abbey, but if gone wrong would instead obliterate her forevermore. After making the preparations, Wanda was ready to perform the ritual and invited all who knew Agatha - the Midnight Suns, Doctor Strange, and Logan - but not Sara, as Agatha warned that she would forbid the ritual as too dangerous. When Wanda began the ritual, everyone present became able to hear and see Agatha. But before it was finished, Sara appeared, having tracked a personal trinket of hers that was stolen for use in the ritual. The interruption enabled Mephisto to hijack the ritual and possess the spirit Agatha. Mephisto wanted to strike a bargain, promising to release Agatha if Illyana was to be turned over him. Instead, Magik cast a spell to banish him and forcibly ejected Mephisto from Agatha's spirit. It worked, and Agatha was freed from Mephisto, and everyone could see and hear her. Being reunited with her love lifted Sarah's spirits, and the two women promised to stay together forevermore.[1]
