Secretary Alexander Pierce shared history with his counterpart from Earth-199999, being a head of S.H.I.E.L.D. while secretly being an agent of Hydra, up until the aftermath of the Battle of New York in 2012. After the Avengers have prevailed over Loki and secured both his scepter and the Tesseract, the scepter was handed over to S.T.R.I.K.E., while Tony Stark took hold of the Tesseract and joined Thor, who put Loki's hands in the binders. Pierce and his entourage confronted them in the lobby of the Stark Tower and used his authority as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the boss of Nick Fury to demand that both be handed over to his men, with the Tesseract being a S.H.I.E.L.D. property for the past 79 years and Loki being a war criminal who should stand trial for his crimes. Unbeknownst to all, Tony Stark and Scott Lang were also present on the scene after time-travelling into the past from the future of Earth-199999, where Thor was able to return to Asgard with both Loki and the Tesseract in hand. Shrunk down in size, Lang had pulled a pin from the Arc Reactor of the native Tony Stark, giving him a minor seizure and causing a confusion among all present. While Pierce called for a medic, Lang kicked over the case containing the Tesseract to the future Tony, who was about to leave the scene in secrecy, but was instead hit over in the head by the Hulk, who punched the door of the staircase he took in anger. This caused the case to slide back and open, revealing the Tesseract, which Loki prompty grabbed and used to teleport away in the confusion. Thor used his Mjolnir to apply a small electrical charge to present Tony's Arc Reactor, instantly stabilizing his condition, before everyone noticed that both Loki and the Tesseract were gone.[1]
