History
Alfeo Spinosa was an Italian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church who served as the curator of the Vatican's San Gabriel Archives.[1] Stephen Strange considered Alfeo to be one of his oldest friends but nothing has been revealed about when and how they first met.[2]
After discovering that the San Gabriel Archives had just been robbed by Baron Mordo, Cardinal Spinosa decided that he had to warn his old friend. After travelling aboard TWA Flight 666 from Rome to New York City, Spinosa attempted to call Strange from Kennedy Airport but he and his disciple Clea had just left. Fearing that his friend would be vulnerable to a sneak attack as long as he remained unaware of Mordo's crime, Spinosa took a taxi to the Sanctum Sanctorum, let himself in and was waiting in the parlor when Strange and Clea returned. Strange welcomed his friend but Spinosa immediately revealed that he was there on business and showed him a picture of Baron Mordo robbing the San Gabriel Archives the previous day.[1]
Spinosa accompanied Strange and Clea as they went to the upstairs room where the catatonic Mordo had been living for months. Spinosa was surprised to see that Mordo was there but Strange, thanks to the photo, now knew that that this Mordo was only an illusion and he immediately dispelled the spirit form. Recalling that one of his old allies, Lord Phyffe, had displayed an unusual interest in Mordo when they had last met, Strange and Spinosa took the first available flight from New York to Paris, France. Upon arrival, they immediately went to Lord Phyffe's home on the right bank of the Seine and entered the unlit mansion through the unlocked front door. Seconds after entering, Strange heard a sound and turned to see Spinosa falling forwards and towards him. Strange attempted to catch him but Spinosa seemingly crumbled into dust in his hands. In that moment of shock, Strange was struck from behind by a cudgel blow to his head that knocked him out. After regaining consciousness, Strange was subjected to various illusions by cultists working for Phyffe and was nearly manipulated into "operating" on a patient. However, after seeing that the "patient" was actually his former lover, Madeleine, Strange was able to break free from the illusion. After accidentally setting the chapel on fire, Strange used his Cloak of Levitation to lift himself and Madeleine out of the house before it collapsed. On the grounds, Strange and Madeleine found Spinosa's dead body, whole but shot through the heart. Strange realized that the disintegration that he had seen had been the actual destruction of his friend's life-force.[3]See Also
