Synopsis for "What Happens Now?"

This story is a reprint of the comic
All-New X-Men #1.

The story opens with Beast writhing in pain on the floor. He notes that he is mutating once again and does not believe that he will survive the process this time. He prays to be allowed to put things right for mutants before he dies when he is called by Storm.

Meanwhile, on the Gold Coast of Australia a young girl named Eva is being coerced by her friend to hit on a guy she likes. The two of them hit it off, when suddenly Eva's brother arrives and beats up the guy. The guy and his friends jump her brother and start beating him while Eva yells for them to stop. Her mutation suddenly triggers and she freezes everyone in time.

Cyclops, Emma Frost and Magneto appear and explain to her what she's going through. They tell her that she's had this one block area stuck in time for 20 hours and that the police and federal guard are waiting outside to charge her. Cyclops tells her that they're going to take her somewhere safe and teach her how to use her powers.

Eva then asks him why he's doing this, and Cyclops responds that he has so much to atone for and that he needs to make things right with the world and make it a better place for mutants. He asks for Eva's help in doing this. Eva manages to undo the temporal freeze when the military suddenly charge and point their guns at her. The guns suddenly crumple,as Cyclops, Magneto and Emma Frost then attack.

Storm, Iceman and Kitty Pryde watch it on the news and Iceman says he's astonished that Cyclops would go so far. He also says that what is going on now is worse than the apocalyptic future for mutants they used to worry about when they were young. Storm remarks that Beast really should see this.

Meanwhile, in the police station in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a boy is being interrogated by the police for bringing back his friend to life after she fell and hit her head. The police accuse him of being a mutant when suddenly Cyclops and Magik burst in and free him. Cyclops stands in front of the security camera and sends a message to mutants, telling them not to let humanity dictate the course of their lives and that they deserve freedom.

Meanwhile, Iceman tries to convince the others that they need to shut him down but Storm refuses, telling them that a mutant civil war is the worst thing that could happen to them now. Kitty argues that they need to do something or the government is going to shut their school down. Iceman remarks that the Scott they grew up with would never stand for something like this and he'd stop the Scott of the present. Beast tells him he's right and abruptly leaves.

Meanwhile, in the past, Hank and Bobby return to the mansion from being attacked by a mob of angry humans. Hank tells Scott that he's fed up with putting his life on the line for humans that hate him and that he's leaving the X-Men. Just as he's about to storm out, he finds present day Beast standing in the doorway. After explaining who he is, Beast asks Cyclops of the past to help him stop his future self from committing mutant genocide.

Synopsis for 2nd story

This story is a reprint of the comic
All-New X-Men #2.

Although shocked at the news of Cyclops' future—as well as the discovery that he has killed Professor X in the future—the X-Men of the past decide to help Beast, the younger version recognizing that he wouldn't do something like this unless it was truly necessary. After arriving in the future at the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning—during which Wolverine instinctively attacks Cyclops before Jean Grey knocks him out—Beast collapses, and the younger version of Beast reveals that his future self is dying; his actions are the result of his desire to accomplish something good in the time he has left to live. Although shaken at the future they have witnessed as they are isolated in one of the rooms, Jean reads Wolverine's mind when he tries to send them back to their own time, noting that, while he is consciously against their presence, he is inwardly grateful to Beast for taking this chance. When they hear news of a mutant riot, young Cyclops reaffirms his dedication to Xavier's dream of peace and the five original X-Men depart in a new Blackbird, determined to confront the future Cyclops.

All-New X-Men #3.

While talking with Magneto, the present Cyclops realizes that their powers are fluctuating after their exposure to the Phoenix Force in the previous war; he can contain his optical blasts without his visor, but has trouble maintaining them when they are used, and Magneto is having trouble with his own magnetic powers. They attempt to rescue Emma Frost from captivity, but she is also having trouble with her powers as her telepathy appears to be weakened even if she can still turn into her diamond form. Magik, however, has gained new abilities from her exposure to the Phoenix Force. Having set up a base in an old Weapon X facility, the three of them depart to rescue a new group of mutants, but are subsequently confronted by the original X-Men, with the young Cyclops challenging his future self to justify his current talk of a "revolution".

Synopsis for 4th story

This story is a reprint of the comic
All-New X-Men #4.

Cyclops and Magneto come face to face with the five original X-Men. Cyclops begins running the various possibilities of how this came to be through his mind, while Magneto calls for whomever caused this to step forward. Jean begins losing control of her telepathy as she cannot filter out Cyclops' thoughts. She lashes out at them with her telekinesis and, in the process, knocks Cyclops' visor off, causing him to lose control of his powers. His younger self attempts to stop him, but is overwhelmed by the force of Cyclops' blasts. The other X-Men rush to attack him, but Magneto helps him and calls for Illyana to teleport them away.

Eva and Christopher are checking out the Weapon X base, while introducing themselves to each other, when Cyclops and Magneto return. Cyclops storms off and Magneto tells Emma what happened and asks her if she did this, which Emma vehemently denies.

Meanwhile, Kitty Pryde and Iceman treat the dying Beast and Kitty accuses Iceman of giving Beast the idea for bringing the original X-Men back. Meanwhile, the original X-Men try to wake up a passed out Jean, who again loses control of her telepathy and is overwhelmed. She suddenly regains control of herself and the team argue about what they should do. Angel argues that they should go back home and forget this ever happened, but he is outvoted and the team decides to return to the mansion.

Emma goes to comfort Cyclops and they both agree that the only person who could have done this is Beast. Emma observes that since he cannot kill Cyclops for killing Xavier, he's going to punish him instead. Meanwhile, Wolverine and Storm argue about what they should do with the missing X-Men, when they return. They both claim to be the ones in charge at the school, and Beast tells them to stay out of his way while he tries to save his future self. Beast requests his latest medical files, but before he can begin his work, his future self goes into cardiac arrest.

Synopsis for 5th story

This story is a reprint of the comic
All-New X-Men #5.

While the present Cyclops recruits a new mutant whose power involves gradual evolution and shapeshifting to develop the mutant powers of others in his vicinity, the past Jean uses her new telepathy to help the two Hanks make mental contact with each other. After Beast is convinced to tell Jean about what she will experience in the future, Hank manages to determine a means of treating his future self's condition. Out in the courtyard, Scott is uncomfortable about the harsh stares he is receiving from the other mutants, and is nearly pushed to tears when Wolverine publicly threatens to kill him unless someone steps in (to which no one does), before the two Hanks emerge from the school, the older Hank now fully cured and reverted to a more human-like appearance. Although Wolverine is in favour of the original team returning to the past where Xavier can erase their memories, Jean refuses to depart until they have saved the future, with the rest of the team with the exception of Angel, who wonders where his present self is in this scenario voting in favour of her decision. With Kitty Pryde volunteering to take responsibility for the past X-Men, past Scott attempts to talk to Jean, but she orders him to stay away from her.
