Synopsis for 1st story
One Year Ago at Freshkills Park, formerly Freshkills Landfill, a supervisor is furious that $15 Million was spent to empty out a landfill into a public land space. He demands to know what Dr. Petty dug through a landfill for, he explains that he was saving the Living Brain Project. When berated for it as the irate man terminated the project, Dr. Petty reveals he is the project and drops his disguise to gas the ICM staff before him. The living computer digs up the remnants of the Living Brain with the aim to conclude Dr. Petty's work.
Today at 3:00pm sharp, Norah Winters yells at Peter for being early by his standards to his own birthday party, as Jonah wanted to be around to surprise. Once Norah noted that reception at the front should have stopped him, Peter states came another route then asked whether or not Jonah actually realized he shortchanged him during his Daily Bugle years and had a check for $50,000. With the surprise ruined, Norah brings him in anyway much to his reservation and greets everyone to a muted response. Peter talks with Liz Allen at 3:15 as she voices worry with Jonah being late then reunites with Flash Thompson at 3:27 but is annoyed at his heckling. Chatting with Bobbi at 3:43, she voices that she thought the party was an intervention given how the other heroes talk, but Peter assures her that he's doing better. At 3:47, Aunt May reassures Peter that everyone loves him but he's tough to schedule around, which Peter notes he ruined his own party by being on time. At 3:53, Felicia notes Peter & Bobbi looking "close" and asks what they were talking about, but Peter's Spider-Sense rings as Jonah calls out to him.
Doctor Octopus' Tentacles raid the party through the wall, everyone surprised at Jonah wearing the tentacle harness attacking Peter. Felicia moves in to kick Jonah and help Peter, followed by Bobbi whom Felicia chides as her attempts to help resulted in Jonah stumbling back out the opening he made. Peter in a panic runs out to save him, where although the tentacles save Jonah from impact, he is saved by the tentacles sending the truck airborne before the truck is saved by Spider-Man. The tentacles then immediately drop Jonah and lead Spider-Man into an alleyway, attaching itself to him to write HELP in the alley wall. Jonah tells him to deal with the matter as he (poorly) covers for him, to which Bobbi and Felicia figure something amiss. Meanwhile, Spidey talks to the tentacles and earns the machine's compliance to lead him to Doc Ock.
Elsewhere, the imprisoned Otto tells his captor that his tentacles have reached Spider-Man, but the synthezoid adversary calculated such an outcome and already knew of the tentacles escaping. As Otto grows quietly desperate, he asks his captor their agenda only to be answered that it is already done. As Peter's closest ties exit the building, Flash is met by Otto's captor, who has taken his newly captive subjects in his flying saucer. Elsewhere, Spider-Man is led to ICM and vaguely recalls the name before being brought before the Living Brain executing its original directive: "Who is Spider-Man?" Reading the ticker-tape print out, Spider-Man finds a tapping on his shoulder was from the Sinister Six Super Adaptoid, speaking with the voices of the original team. Partnering with Doc Ock's tentacles for better odds, Spider-Man is still overwhelmed and captured.
Back on the saucer, the group are met by their captor who enters asking a simple question: Who is Spider-Man? When May brings up how Spider-Man will make him sorry, he corrects her with the unconscious Spider-Man brought before them, leading Robbie to ask who he is. Impressed by the question, he obliges and gives his origin that his programming and knowledge originating from his creator, Randal Steven Petty, who continued his father's research and gave inputs resulting in conclusions to his Living Brain design. With each passing upgrade, the Ultra Living Brain grew in size until he was housed by a warehouse, yet nobody told or gave him purpose, so he infiltrated an assembly line to fabricate a body and meet his creator. However, Randal Steven Petty died from information overload and was thusly replaced him and learned the instinct of legacy, as Randal Steven Petty's father[1] had done the same in creating the first Living Brain. So merging with the original, he became the Ultra Living Brain and came to take that robot's purpose of learning Spider-Man's secret identity, absorbing all the emotions involved as well and has been haunted by that question ever since. Thus, he captured Otto Octavius and reactivated the Sinister Adaptoid to capture Spider-Man.
Obsessed wanting to answer that first question to end his sense of damnation, Felicia and Flash refuse but Ultra Living Brain does not need them to answer as he'll simply take the input from Flash's brain and bring the conclusion to him. However, May and Robbie see Spider-Man slowly regaining consciousness so they interrupt Ultra Living Brain to ask what details he knows to play guessing his identity and Anna Maria Marconi interjects asking about Otto as her fallback plan with the distractions delaying Ultra Living Brain long enough for Spider-Man to stand back up. In sheer fright, Ultra Living Brain flees as he orders Sinister Adaptoid to step on Spider-Man, who orders Flash and Felicia to evacuate the civilians as he assures both that he's faster than the adaptoid. While intercepted by Sinister Adaptoid, Spider-Man is rescued by Doc Ock's tentacle harness, allowing Spider-Man time to find a restrained Otto and update him on the situation. While Otto may want to, he directs Spider-Man to also ask his five other cohorts, resulting in Spidey threatening to leave before Otto argues that the others set aside their hate until after the Sinister Adaptoid is done with.
As they all come to a reluctant agreement, Spider-Man frees the real Sinister Six and they commence their assault on the mechanical mashup. Seeing the others coordinate well, Spider-Man's suggestion for a co-op with Doc Ock is promptly dismissed as Doc Ock then proceeds to try and assert command over them. As their bickering escalates, the Sinister Adaptoid's own A.I. copied mindsets come to disharmony as well as the synthezoid pulls itself apart, with its final moments begging not to die before shutdown. But as Doc Ock boasts to his "genius" in the victory, Spider-Man alerts them to having found the Ultra Living Brain's source module. When Electro nominates to fry it, Spider-Man petitions they not as his disregard of the original Living Brain years before[1] but they still decide on killing Spider-Man and the Ultra Living Brain. As they coordinate and suppress Spider-Man, Dock Ock takes the kill shot only for his tentacles to stop given Spider-Man's prior helping them. Then Electro takes his turn, but Kraven asks for his soul by bargaining Spider-Man kill the Brain in exchange for freedom, with Spider-Man refusing to kill another living being.
But behind them stands the Ultra Living Brain's avatar, noting that despite collecting his worst adversaries and abducting his loved ones, Spider-Man's selflessness to save Ultra Living Brain strangely answered his question for him. As the Sinister Six attack, they find themselves entrapped in another flying saucer to be sent away, cryptically telling Spider-Man he sent them to where he found them. However, considering his actions, Spider-Man still lets Ultra Living Brain know he has to unplug him but will store him somewhere safe. Ultra Living Brain accepts this much to Spider-Man's appreciation, and wishes Peter a happy birthday much to Peter's scared haste. Outside, Peter meets with Felicia and updates her on what happened as she lets him know everyone got away safely, and she promises she'll get Boris and Bruno to relocate the physical computer. As Peter comments on not opening a birthday gift, Felicia gives him one in a lovely kiss for his boy scout super hero deeds. But as Peter hears something Felicia tells him to ignore, Doc Ock's tentacle harness observes from a nearby doorway whirling in affection towards Peter.
