History

Leora, Amazon Queen of Ophir[5] was assisted by her Ophirian Amazons.[2] They were known to capture men for slow torture.[3]

During the invasion of Aquilonia by the alliance of Ophir, King Tarascus II's Nemedia, and King Xantaus' Argos, the Ophirian Amazons put out Zelata's eyes and slew her familiars.[2] They later harshly welcomed Crassus into the invaders' camp.[1]

Later, after the invasion was foiled and the alliance fell apart, Xantaus camped at the Alimane River, where an Amazon came to propose a place and time for he and Leora to meet and reforge their alliance.[6] Camping in Zingara, they had Crassus guarded and brought to them by an Amazon.[7]

During the siege of Belverus, capital of Nemedia, by the Aquilonian forces, Conan offered safe conduct to the women and children of Belverus. Those thousands of refugees fled to Numalia but were driven out, sent to beg for Queen Leora's help. Leora met them at the pass between Nemedia and Ophir, where she had her Amazons crush the refugees under boulders.[8]

Having defeated Nemedia, Conan's forces turned toward Ophir. Conan foiled the ambush at the pass by having his Kushite legion, led by Kuaga, outflank them. Though saving the scouts below, the Kushites were soon outnumbered by the Amazons, and were themselves saved only by Servius Gallannus' Bossonian archers dispatched on Conan's orders.[3]

In Zingara, Amazons pursued El Mullah to make it seems like he was an ally of Conan with urgent news.[3] They were later deployed along Argos' and Ophir' armies, and their Zingaran allies, to stop the Aquilonian alliance forces (made up of Aesir, Cimmerians, Kushites, and Zingarans) on their way to Kordava. Despite their numbers, the Ophirians and Argosseans were crushed by the return of Conan, believed dead, and the Aquilonians were free to set up camp before Kordava's walls.[9] Amazon sentries were slain during the infiltration preceeding the conquest of Kordava.[4]
