Quote1 The Ancient One is enigmatic to say the least. Who can guess what they're thinking? Then there's the question of WHICH Ancient One could've done it? If they exist as every version of themselves in every reality... things get CONFUSING! Quote2
Anathi[src]

The Ancient Ones are variants of Stephen Strange who share the Ancient One's mantle as the headmaster and Baron of the Temple of Vishanti.[1]

History

Origins[]

In their individual realities, those who became the Ancient Ones were once Doctor Stephen Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme and master of the Sanctum Sanctorum. Through his study of magical objects and the Book of Vishanti, Doctor Strange was guided to the Time Stone that he used to see into the catastrophic future. Strange's warning to his mentor, the Ancient One, ultimately went unheeded and their home on the Island of Agamotto was dimensionally shattered by what was remembered as the Great Cleft.[2]

The surviving Doctor Strange variants were changed forever after losing their mentors and their lovers, Clea. They vowed to protect all realities from the possibility of another catastrophic Great Cleft and affixed their mind's eye to the Time Stone. Upon their return from the Dark Dimension, the Strange variants assumed the Ancient One's mantle. After stabilizing the chaotic dimensional fragments into the Isles of Agamotto, the Ancient Ones established the Temple of Vishanti to teach those who sought knowledge in exchange for their devotion to mulitversal defense.[2]

An Ancient One summons a multiversal attack against the Maestro

The Ancient Ones were publicly neutral during the Maestro's conquest across Battleworld since the Temple of Vishanti could not support a war on two fronts.[2] Despite this, an Ancient One colluded with the other Barons of Battleworld to secretly assassinate the Maestro. When the Maestro proved to be too powerful, the Ancient One summoned the alternate reality counterparts of the Barons to assist them.[3] These collective efforts demonstrated to the Chronoserpent, who killed Maestro using Glykhan, that the Barons could become Battleworld's new tyrants.[4] Afterwards, the Ancient Ones joined the other Barons into the Council of Shawarma to deter the Houses from warring. For the Deathmatch arena, an Ancient One took a Cosmic Cube from an unknown reality and created astral projections of its power that gave random chaotic effects upon contact.[2]

The Ancient Ones began summoning Kali and her variants to the Battlerealm to gather knowledge against an "unknowable foe".[5] When they didn't return, Agatha exchanged her services for the Web-Warriors's intel on the Ancient One.[2]

Elegy[]

After a year of investigating, the Anathi returned to the Maestro's throne room at the whim of an anonymous tip where the Barons revealed to her that they all contributed to the Maestro's death. When the present Ancient One elaborated by using his Time Stone to transport Anathi and himself to the Maestro's death,[3] the two were spotted by Glykhan, who abducted Anathi to the Chronoserpent's asteroid for questioning. The Ancient One attempted to intervene, but he was effortlessly defeated by a spark of the Chronoserpent's energy. After Anathi freed herself, another Doctor Strange of unknown affiliation to the Ancient Ones, summoned Galactus as a force to balance against the Chronoserpent's power.[4]

The Ancient Ones were among those who evacuated from Battleworld before the Chronoserpent and Galactus could ravage the planet in their conflict.[6]

Eye of Agamotto

  • Time Stone: The Time Stone is housed within the Eye of Agamotto.[7] There were rumors and speculation around why the Ancient Ones affixed their mind's eye to the Time Stone. One rumor suggested that their use of the Time Stone in the Dark Dimension forced their minds to operate strictly in the metaphysical world by enabling them to live in every possible past, present and future. Another rumor speculated that the Ancient Ones had a sinister bargain with Dormammu.[2]
Wand of Watoomb: Capable of recycling the energy from mystical attacks to either heal its wielder, conjure magical blasts or create defensive barriers.[7]
