Andrew Ashendrew was a miserly landlord in Victorian England who evicted a dying woman who cursed him to endure ridicule. Upon leaving, he broke his spectacles and a stranger (presumably some version of Satan) offered to replace them. He saw a woman in a carriage whom he took to be lovely and tracked her down. He courted her, and she agreed to marry him. The bystanders mocked him, and he demanded to know why. The stranger appeared once more having repaired the man's spectacles. When the landlord glanced at his new wife, he saw that he had married a hag. The stranger explained that what he saw through his glasses was his own conceit.[1]
