History

Angerboda (Earth-616) from Thor Vol 1 360 002

Origin[]

Angerboda was a giantess of Jotunheim[2] and a witch.[4][2] She was born to the Elderspawn Vârcolac and Echidna, respectively spawn of the Elder Gods Chthon and Set.[5]

Mother of Three Monsters[]

At some point she mated with Loki, and she gave birth to the Midgard Serpent[4] and the Fenris Wolf.[6]

It is also believed that it is because both parents are shapeshifters that the children came out thus, their form corresponding to the form of their parents during their intercourses.[7]

During their relationship, Loki brought Angerboda a girl, Hela, whom they raised together as their own daughter.[8]

Death and Hel[]

Angerboda died of unknown causes at some point afterwards, and was sent to the underworld of Hel.[1]

When Thor needed to know how to get to Hela's realm because she had been taking mortals to Niffleheim, he went to the Hlidskjalf and summoned Angerboda from the underworld, forcing her to tell him how to get there. Once she revealed to Thor the path he had to follow, she tried to take him with her to the underworld.[1]

Return[]

Angerboda showed up, alive again, as one of Loki's numerous ex-lovers brought together to get revenge on him for his infidelity and refusal to believe his new role as god of stories. Angerboda later fought and was defeated by the Young Avengers.[9]
