Annwn was a netherworld realm[1] and the Celtic underworld.[3]
History
Celtic Underworld[]
Annwn served as the Celtic underworld and was governed by Arawn, the death god of the Tuatha de Danaan.[2] An entrance to the realm was located west of Gwynn's Woods, in the southern region of Tír na nÓg, in the Otherworld.[4] Arawn's rule was once challenged by Hafgan, but the conflict concluded when Hafgan was slain by Pwyll, a mortal ally of Arawn. At another point in time, Leir briefly held dominion over Annwn.[3]
Tuatha Home[]
Most of the Tuatha dwelled in Tír na nÓg, an island neighboring Avalon, while a few resided in their underworld, Annwn.[2] Two other Nethergods, Necromon and Mandrac, were believed to be Tuatha death gods associated with Annwn.[2] The Cŵn Annwn, supernatural hounds born in Annwn, were owned by Gwynn, the Celtic god of springtime and hunters.[1] These hounds also served Arawn and were known to chase errant souls into the underworld.[2]
Hyborian Age[]
During the Hyborian Age, Arawn conjured a stone portal linking Annwn to the cursed Twilight Forest in the Border Kingdom. He attempted to have his Cŵn Annwn, spirit-beasts, escort a mortal woman named Merya to his realm. However, Conan the Barbarian intervened, attacking the hounds. When Arawn confronted Conan directly, Conan exploited Arawn's vulnerability to fire, inflicting pain on the death god and forcing him to retreat through the portal back to Annwn.[5]
4th Century[]
Around 350 AD, after a failed coup following the decision of the Tuatha to leave Earth,[2] Bodb Derg was banished to Annwn by his fellow Celtic gods.[6] There, he eventually merged with the Red Lord, the aspect of the primordial Earth Mother Gaea that represents decay, entropy, and destruction. Bodb Derg established a power base in Annwn, solidifying his influence over the realm.[7]
Modern Age[]
Red Lord's Realm[]
As the Red Lord, Bodb Derg was freed from Annwn by his loyal Bane through a sacrifice ritual.[8] The Bane later followed him to the Green Knight's Green Chapel, but the endeavor ultimately failed, forcing Bodb Derg to retreat back to Annwn.[9] In a separate event, the mutant Magpie found himself in Annwn[10] and attempted to summon the Red Lord in Avalon, though this effort also proved unsuccessful.[11]
Manchester Gods[]
Most recently, Master Wilson, a spokesperson for the Manchester Gods, traveled to Annwn and captured the Red Lord. The Manchester Gods harnessed the Red Lord’s fury to power their moving Citadel.[12]Residents

Notes
- In Welsh mythology, Annwn is the Otherworld, the realm of the Gods, ruled by Arawn. It later became identified with the Christian afterlife (paradise, heaven).[13]
