History

Eugene Thompson (Earth-616), Anti-Venom III (Symbiote) (Earth-616), and Tandy Bowen (Earth-616) from Savage Avengers Vol 2 5 001

Appearance as a symbiote-dragon.

During Knull's invasion of Earth, Thor Odinson, Storm, and Dylan Brock were able to sever the dark god's hold over several Symbiotes and symbiote-dragons. While their physical forms were rendered inert, Knull had their metaphysical consciences imprisoned within the core of the Symbiote Hive-Mind.[4][5]

Within the Hive-Mind, the codex of Flash Thompson was able to free the trapped symbiotes and bond to them, incarnating in the real world as a symbiote-dragon with the appearance of his Anti-Venom symbiote.[6] At the suggestion of Eddie Brock, Flash subsequently used the symbiote-dragon to reanimate his deceased physical body, effectively resurrecting himself.[7]

When the returned Carnage set out to form his own hive to rival Venom's, he telepathically assaulted Flash Thompson to recruit Anti-Venom, but their connection was severed.[8] Upon learning that his former protégé Andi Benton had been captured by Alchemax, Flash was enraged to the extent that his symbiote briefly assumed a monstrous form -- sprouting a fanged maw, large claws, and draconic horns.[9]

The symbiote briefly bonded to Tandy Bowen after being blasted off Flash's bones by the Ultron-controlled Weapon H, but was stripped from her and re-bonded to Flash's corpse after Dagger was killed and she and Flash were converted into Deathlok units,[10] though they were eventually returned to normal.[11]

Carnage eventually returned in a crusade to become a god, creating a clone of its former host.[12] Eventually, Carnage sealed Flash in the Darkforce Dimension, intending to weaken the Anti-Venom symbiote in order to absorb it.[13] Pursuing Flash in a death metal concert, it managed to absorb the Anti-Venom symbiote fully and, as part of its strategy, it allowed itself to be attacked by Anti-Venom's cleansing touch in order to weaken it,[2] Carnage possibly devouring its mind and killing it as it did to Mania.[14]

Fortunately, Flash managed to regain the Anti-Venom symbiote through unknown means.[15]

Personality

While the Anti-Venom symbiote has yet to express an individual personality, comments made by Flash Thompson to Tony Stark indicate that it does have a mind of its own.[8] The disorientation caused by being sent back in time to the Hyborian Age caused Flash and the symbiote's unity to falter, with the symbiote acting feral during a battle with Zingarans.[16]

Notes

  • Although in a conversation with Iron Man, Flash mentions that the host and the symbiote work together in denial that Tony believes he controls the symbiote, leaving in question whether the symbiote has a certain degree of consciousness.[8] In Carnage (Vol. 4) #2 the symbiote is confirmed to have its own consciousness, though it is non-verbal.
  • After Cletus' return, he referred to the symbiote as his cousin as if he were the offspring of Anti-Venom.[8] Most likely, he is unaware of the exact origin of this third Anti-Venom.[6]
  • This Anti-Venom was apparently created after Flash downloaded and bonded with the Hive-Mind symbiotes forming a real-life Dragon-Symbiote, however, due to the lack of further information, it is unknown whether this is the same Anti-Venom that was reborn or a new Gestalt symbiote that was formed from Flash's codex.
  • In Extreme Carnage: Lasher #1 the symbiote was indicated to not possess the healing and cleansing abilities of its predecessor, but Savage Avengers (Vol. 2) #2 and Carnage (Vol. 4) #4 depict it as possessing the original Anti-Venom's cleansing powers.
