Antjie Qoboza[source]

History

Activated as a mutant pyrokinetic following the dispersion of the Phoenix Force, crusading human rights attorney and peace activist Antjie Qoboza decided to host a panel, "Moderating the Murder: A Debate on Arms Regulation," at the Security and Defense Symposium, an arms industry convention, in Alexandria, Egypt.

Knowing full well the vast majority of the attendees despised her, to the point that she was asked to leave multiple times before her panel even began, Qoboza demonstrated her powers in full view of her audience to make plain that she was more than capable of defending herself from their aggression. Suddenly, she received a mysterious signal through her earpiece that caused her powers to rage out of control, ultimately erupting into a massive conflagration that incinerated the entire convention hall and almost all of the 3000 people therein, including herself. Nathan and Hope Summers were the sole survivors.

"The Alexandria Incident" became an enormous public relations disaster for the mutant community, while creating sympathy for the arms industry by casting them as victims of mutant terrorism. Unbeknownst to all involved at the time, this was exactly as intended by the true architect of the tragedy, Russian weapons baron Yevgeny Volga, who had used his slave, the power-amplifying mutant MeMe, to send the fatal signal to Qoboza.[1]
