Her dreams shattered, she transformed into cold-hearted Bora, a self-appointed agent of retribution who hunted down and killed ballet dancers who "betrayed" her country, until she was eventually stopped by Moon Knight.[2]

Years later she joined the Avant Guard, the group of similarly minded people, crazily-obsessed with their art.[3] Together their created their greatest masterpiece by plunging New York into a new ice age,[4] but were eventually stopped by Spider-Man and Human Torch.[5]

Origin[]

Anzhela Federova (Russian: Анжела Федерова) was a young girl from Russia who trained for years to become a ballet dancer and hoped to become the greatest ballerina of all. Unfortunately, when she was 14-years old her mutant powers manifested and she grew up to 7 foot overnight. With such height, she was no longer able to become a ballerina. Losing her lifelong dream, Anzhela was devastated. After her ballet teacher and some of his other students migrated from Russia, she felt resentment, because, unlike her, they could have become ballet dancers in Russia, but refused to do so. Resentment drove her mad, as Anzhela discovered that mutation also granted her the power to control cold winds, she named herself Bora and decided to take out her grievances on them.[2]

Agent of Retribution[]

She tracked down one of the dancers, Mariya Andreyanova to Paris, France, and accused her of "stealing" her gift from their country. Since Mariya wanted to have a bigger stage, Bora used wind to hurl Mariya into the sky, giving her the biggest possible stage.[2]

Bora then tracked down her former teacher, Sergey Valberg to the United States of America. He was now a part of the corps de ballet in Manhattan. Bora attacked him during his training session and accused him just like Mariya, but Sergey refused to accept the blame, because it was his life, so only he could decide how to live it. As Bora summoned the cold winds to kill him, Sergey started to dance. Anzhela thought he was doing so to change her mind, but instead he was doing it to die the way he lived, by honoring life through the dance. Temperature in the room dropped to 60 degrees below zero and Sergey eventually succumbed to it and died.[2]

Bora's actions were witnessed by Moon Knight, but since he was heavily injured, he was unable to help Sergey. However, the way Sergey faced his death and his courage inspired Moon Knight to overcome his injuries.[2]

Bora's last target was a group of Russian dancers, performing in the Barrington Theater. But when she attacked the theater, she was stopped not only by Moon Knight, but also by the X-Men and the Fantastic Fourwhom he invited for help. During the fight, Nightcrawler distracted Bora and Moon Knight used this to get close to her and knocked her out.[2]

New Ice Age[]

It is unknown what happened to Anzhela in the next several years or why she stopped her attempts for revenge. She remained in New York and at some point met young performance artist Spark. The two fell in love and performed together, but their art wasn't appreciated by the public.[3][5] They were contacted by the mysterious Painter of 1000 Perils, who convinced them to perform a magical ritual that connected Bora and Spark's souls with the Painter. In result their powers were greatly amplified, while he got access to their youthful imagination and inspiration[4]

Bora and Spark were ready to die for their art, so Painter convinced them to kill for it as well by plunging New York into a new ice age.[3] He called it a life-sized performance "The Next Ice Rage", meant to represent the triviality of material gains in the face of nature's fury.[4]

With her greatly-enhanced powers, Bora caused a snowstorm that paralyzed entire New York City. While various heroes tried to stop the blizzard and save the citizens, Spider-Man tracked the source of it to Bora, but was quickly defeated by her.[4]

Spider-Man later teamed-up with Human Torch and together they attacked the Avant Guard. Bora and Spark were defeated, but Painter restored their strength and they fought again. The Painter, however, was disappointed to see the same situation to repeat, because it was against his art. To do something new and fresh he admitted defeat. The Painter transformed both Bora and Spark into painting and then escaped. Human Torch gave the painting to Reed Richards to figure out how to free Bora and Spark.[5]

M-Day[]

It is unknown how exactly Bora was freed from the painting, but years later she was among millions of mutants who lost their powers during the M-Day.[6]

Personality

Anzhela was obsessed with her dancing so much, what losing the chance to become a ballerina drove her mad from rage. According to her, she would have sold her soul to dance on a professional stage for even a moment. Anzhela blamed others for seemingly betraying her dreams, and believed what the winds she controlled chose her to punish the "traitors" and guided her actions. Perhaps she used this to convince herself that she was not responsible for killing people.[2]

After becoming a part of the Avant Guard she became even more obsessed with her art. She caused a giant blizzard and didn't cared if millions of people could freeze to death in result, because they all were part of her "masterpiece".[5]

Attributes

Powers

Wind Manipulation (formerly): Bora was a mutant,[2] but she lost her powers during the M-Day.[6] Formerly she was able to subconsciously open a passageway to her homeland and through it summon the arctic winds from their traditional climate to wherever Bora was. The winds were able to reach speeds of 125 miles per hour and were strong enough to immobilize people, hurl a person into sky, and potentially even tear a building apart. At first Bora was only able to affect the area of a few dozens meters around her, and her control over the winds weren't very strong and Storm could've easily overcome it.[2] However, after her powers were magically amplified by Painter of 1000 Perils, she was able to completely paralyze entire New York City with a blizzard and Thor was unable to stop it.[4]

  • Cold Generation: The winds she summoned were very cold and were able to drop temperature around her a full degree per second. She was able to drop temperature in the room to 60 degrees below zero in just few moments. According to Bora she could freeze a person to brittleness and snap them with the wind.[2] After her powers were amplified by Painter she was able to encase Spider-Man in the ice[4] and put out flames of Human Torch.[5]

Abilities

Bilingual: She know both Russian and English.[2]

Notes

  • The bora is a violent cold, dry northerly wind in areas near the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Black Sea basins.
