Synopsis for "The Hunting"
This story continues from Spider-Man #54...
A gang of thieves are hassling a homeless woman in the park, dumping her personal possessions onto the ground. Among the possessions the homeless woman is trying to protect, the most prized possession is a photo of her daughter. The thugs are interrupted by the assassin known as Kaine. Although he kills the thieves, he dismisses the homeless woman, crushing her beloved photo under his foot as he leaves.
Meanwhile, the Scarlet Spider is racing across the city in the hopes of getting to the home of Peter Parker. He hopes he can get there ahead of the Grim Hunter who has been hunting Spider-Man and up until their recent clash, was mistakenly tracking the Scarlet Spider's sense. He is forced to delay his progress when a taxi cab skids out of control on the icy roads. He quickly prevents the out-of-control taxi from striking pedestrians and quickly resumes his course. While back at the Kravinoff mansion, Vladimir Kravinoff meditates before a portrait of his father. He is observed by his friend Gregor, who once again wonders if Vladimir's obsession with avenging his father's death by destroying Spider-Man.[Continuity 1] However, despite his concerns, he still is there to provide support for his friend, gathering Vladimir's Grim Hunter garb for him so he can resume his hunt for Spider-Man. While at a police station, Detective Jacob Raven of Salt Lake City has enlisted the aid of the NYPD's Connor Trevane to help investigate a cold case that he has been investigating. He is particularly interested in a string of dead men that have turned up with matching burns on their faces. He explains to Trevane that his case, from two years prior, and that the killer left fingerprints. Having found a match on the NYPD database, they decide to pay a visit to the killer.[Continuity 2]
By this time, the Scarlet Spider has staked out a spot overlooking the Parker home to wait for the Grim Hunter. His presence is detected by Kaine, who is also watching the Parker home. He is angry that the Spider is here to interfere with his plans for the Parkers and ambushes the Scarlet Spider. The Spider is surprised to see Kaine is in New York as well and tries to incapacitate the assassin with a barrage of stingers and impact-webbing, but they have no effect on Kaine. As the Scarlet Spider is being beaten, he spots the Grim Hunter heading to the Parker home. Unfortunately, despite the Scarlet Spider's best efforts he is beaten into submission. Spotting the Grim Hunter himself, Kaine goes to confront him before he can break into the Parker home. Watching from the opposite roof top, the Scarlet Spider struggles to get up and stop both men before Peter Parker is hurt, but passes out after the beating he has just taken.

Synopsis for "Before I Wake"
This story continues from Spectacular Spider-Man #220...
Standing outside of a brownstone in Manhattan's Upper East Side, Doctor Octopus takes stock in the life of Peter Parker.[Continuity 3] He believes that Peter Parker has it all, a wonderful home, and a beautiful wife.[Continuity 4] Upon learning all this, Otto wonders if his old foe really wants to embrace death as much as he claims.[Continuity 5]
Meanwhile, inside the Parker home, Peter Parker has just heard that Mary Jane is pregnant.[Continuity 6] This brings great joy to Peter and he begins to leap around the room. Thinking to himself, he prays that Aunt May wakes up from her coma and live long enough to meet this child.[Continuity 7] With this new revelation, Peter doesn't want to give up and die anymore and wonders how he is going to tell Mary Jane about the poison that threatens to kill him. Seeing how sad her husband now looks, Mary Jane assumes that Peter is worried about their finances. Peter tells her not to worry about anything, once more excited by the news that they are going to have a baby. Even though Mary Jane notices he is feverish, Peter rushes to the shower, telling her that they need to go to the hospital and tell May the good news, hoping that this could snap her out of her coma. While her husband is in the bathroom, Mary Jane's mood goes from joy to concern. She is now considering Peter's altered DNA and wonders what sort of child she may have as a result.
Soon, Peter and Mary Jane are at the hospital where Aunt May now rests. Peter tells May that he is going to have a child and begs for her to come out of her coma so she can meet his child. Unfortunately, May doesn't come out of her coma, and the Parkers leave. However, this news has caused a stir in May, who is teetering on the brink of letting go and allowing herself to pass away. Although her mind is tired and wants to let go, she feels that something keeps her tethered to the world of the living. Later, Peter and Mary Jane go out for dinner at a fancy restaurant to celebrate the good news. However, Peter begins to feel dizzy and drops his glass on the ground. A man takes charge of the situation, suggesting that Mary Jane take her husband home. However, as the Parkers have come here often, she mistakes this man as a staff member that they have not met yet. The man corrects her, saying that he doesn't work at the restaurant and then abruptly leaves.[Continuity 8] Suddenly, Peter's spider-sense goes off and he sees Doctor Octopus standing on the roof from across the street. Despite Mary Jane's protests, Peter insists that he needs to go adn rushes off to change into Spider-Man.
Spider-Man is furious that yet another villain is invading his civilian life and is tired of it, and attacks Octavius.[Continuity 9] Although the wall-crawler is trying to attack him, Otto insists that he has come to try and help cure Spider-Man of the poison that is slowly killing him. Spider-Man begins to vaguely remember being in Octavius' lab recently. Growing weak again, Spider-Man asks the Doctor why he wants to help. Otto explains that Spider-Man gives him a sense of continuity and inspires and wants to save Peter Parker's life so they can continue their rivalry. With no other choice, Spider-Man accepts the offer and takes otto's hand.
Meanwhile, Stunner is spending her time away from her lover to test out her powers. As she exercises across Central Park. There she grinds to a halt when someone shouts a warning to stay away from Doctor Octopus. She looks around for the source of the warning but finds no trace of who said it. Not far away stands the assassin known as Kaine. He is satisfied with giving her his warning and leaves Stunner to her fate. At that moment, at Doctor Octopus' lab, the villain has crafted what he claims is an antidote for the wall-crawler. Despite his reservations, Peter drinks the antidote and fees better at first. However, he suddenly screams in pain and falls to the ground. Otto stands as his foe seemingly dies, and smiles. Suddenly, Peter's soul leaves his body and he finds himself among the souls swirling around the portal to the afterlife. Parker refuses to accept the fact that he is dead.[Continuity 10] That's when he is approached by the spirit of Nick Katzenberg. Nick reminds Peter that souls that are unwilling to accept that they are dead are stuck among the living until they finally resign to the fact that have moved on.[Continuity 11]
Refusing to accept the truth, Peter flies back to the city below. He finds himself drawn to the hospital where Aunt May has been in a coma since her stroke. There he is visited by her spirit, who tells Peter that he shouldn't be here and that he has a great adventure ahead of him. When he asks her where he needs to go, she points out a bright star in the sky. Reminding him of his favorite story, Peter Pan, May tells Peter fly to the second star on the right and keep on flying until morning. With these words echoing in his head, Peter flies up toward the star and enters the light.

Synopsis for "A Time to Die!"
This story continues from Amazing Spider-Man #398...
Peter Parker has seemingly died of a viral infection and now finds himself being pulled into the afterlife.[Continuity 12] His horror is soon turned to surprise when he realizes that the force pulling him into the afterlife is the spirit of his Uncle Ben.[Continuity 13] Ben is proud to see the type of strong young man that Peter has grown into. He then takes Peter to meet the spirits of his parents, Richard and Mary Parker. Ben wishes the three of them could have warned Peter about the impostors that were posing as his parents recently, but assure him that he doesn't have to worry about that sort of craziness ever again.[Continuity 14] This happy reunion is suddenly marred when Peter suddenly screams in pain. This is because, in the land of the living, Doctor Octopus is trying to restart Peter's heart with electrical jolts. Otto has just discovered that his cure worked, however not before it had done damage and he went into heart failure. Although Parker is flat-lining, Doctor Octopus refuses to let his archnemesis die. Back in the afterlife, Peter is being pulled back to the land of the living. His descent is stopped by the spirit of Harry Osborn. Harry says that this is not Peter's time, but unlike the others, he is willing to force him to stay. Suddenly, Harry changes into the Green Goblin while boasting how he will look forward to tormenting Peter for all eternity. However, Peter refuses to stay, as he wants to embrace life and falls through the vortex again.
Back in the world of the living, Doctor Octopus manages to revive Peter using CPR. With Parker about to regain consciousness, Otto orders Stunner to go and carry out the task that he gave him while he waits for his eternal dance with Spider-Man to begin anew. As Stunner leaves the facility, she is still unaware of the fact that the hideout is being watched by Kaine, who is ready to act. Inside, Peter Parker wakes up, giving Octavius a moment to enjoy the moment that Parker realizes that he was saved by his greatest enemy, especially since he has been unmasked. Putting Parker's Spider-Man mask back on, Otto explains that the reason he revived the wall-crawler is so they can continue their endless struggle. Realizing that Doctor Octopus is spoiling for another fight, Spider-Man can't believe that Otto is serious about it. Before the two can clash, the police burst in, having been called in on an anonymous tip. Surprisingly, Doctor Octopus surrenders to the authorities telling Spider-Man that he is doing so intentionally so that he can begin plotting his next scheme. With Doctor Octopus in police custody, Spider-Man web-slings away, exhilarated to be alive after his recent brush with death. He thinks about Mary Jane's recent revelation that she is pregnant, and Peter is excited at the prospect of becoming a father.[Continuity 15] He can't wait to get home to celebrate with his wife.[Continuity 16]
Meanwhile, Mary Jane has been busy scrubbing their apartment top to bottom wondering what is happening to their lives. Fearing for the future, Mary Jane's worries melt away when Peter returns home with a bouquet of roses and a gift for her. He tells her that he is ready to start the first day of the rest of their lives. Mary Jane quickly opens the present and is delighted to see that Peter has bought a crib for their coming child. At that very moment, Stunner watches from the rooftop waiting to leap down and free Doctor Octopus from the prisoner transport truck that he has been detained in. Unfortunately, Kaine has other ideas and knocks her out with a gas bomb. He then leaps down on the truck and rips it open with his bare hands. Seeing that his rescuer is not Stunner, Otto becomes enraged and demands to know what happened to her. Kaine assures Otto that she is safe and that his business only pertains to him. As the two fight in the streets, Peter and Mary Jane put together their new crib. Ultimately, Kaine overpowers Doctor Octopus and snaps his neck, killing him instantly.[Continuity 17] As a final indignity to Octavius, Kaine burns his mark on the villain's face. Later, Stunner wakes up and rushes to the scene of the battle. There she is horrified to see the dead body of her beloved Otto Octopus.Notes
