History
Aubrey met Lord Ruthven at a reception at Lady Mercer's and they were both smitten with each other. When Ruthven had to leave for Greece he asked Aubrey to accompany him. Passing through Paris, Aubrey and Ruthven separated, with Aubrey traveling to Greece where he befriended Ianthe, the host's daughter, who acted as his guide and told him stories about vampires. When one evening Aubrey went late in the evening into the places where vampires were said to gather, Ianthe tried to reach him to warn him not to go but she herself was attacked and killed by a vampire despite the intervention of Aubrey who tried to confront him. He was later joined by Ruthven in Greece and during the journey together they were attacked by bandits who stabbed Ruthven with a knife. On his deathbed, Ruthven made Aubrey swear not to tell anyone that he was dead. Once back in England, however, Aubrey discovered that Lord Ruthven had not died but had instead become her sister Jessica's fiancé, having told her that he had saved Aubrey's life.[1]
