The Ghost created a panopticon, where she could savor every indignity we suffered. She made life hell for us... and I dreamed about repaying that favor every night for more than a decade until I finally got the chance to cave her head in.

Ava Starr[source]

Ava Starr was a prisoner in the Negative Zone in a reality utterly ruled by Doctor Doom. For over a decade, she and her son were tortured by her jailer, the paranoid and cruel Ghost. Her torment ended when Doctor Doom was slain by his own Acolytes and her prison was raided by the monstrosity known as Annihilus. This gave her an opportunity to kill the Ghost and steal her technology and identity. Unfortunately, her kid became a victim of Annihilus. Having impersonated her aggressor, Starr joined Doom's champions and killers and kept her true identity concealed.[1] In an unexpected twist, she was brought to the past by Doctor Doom's son, Kristoff Vernard, to join his Superior Avengers and magnify Doom's name,[2] where she schemed against her teammates.[1]

History

One World Under Doom[]

Ava Starr was born in world where Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Doom ruled supreme for many decades after seizing control over the leaderships of most governments. In this setting, totalitarianism was reinforced via incarceration in the Negative Zone. Starr became a prisoner of Doom's labor camps when she was fourteen, being under the surveillance of the Ghost, the paranoid prison warden Doctor Doom had assigned to torture the captives. For over a decade, Starr endured immense cruelty at the hands of the Ghost, which became significantly worse after she had a son.[1]

At some point, Doctor Doom was betrayed and assassinated by the group of champions he had assembled to carry on his rule.[3] Without a mystical protector, reality became vulnerable to the rise of the deadly Annihilus. One of his targets was the prisons in the Negative Zone, enabling a breakout. Ava Starr took the opportunity to murder the Ghost and steal her technological suit. Tragically, her son became a target of one of Annihilus' drones of the Annihilation Wave. Having secretly impersonated the Ghost, Ava Starr joined Doom's acolytes.[1]

Superior Avengers[]

More than a century in the past, when Doctor Doom had just recently risen to power, his adopted son, Kristoff Vernard, probed into the timelines to locate heroes of his father's regime to promote the successful outcome of a benevolent and absolute rule. Using the Time Platform, Vernard assembled the Superior Avengers, unaware that they had been responsible for the murder of their leader. The Ghost cooperated with these Avengers without revealing her true identity. Without Vernard's knowledge, they built the Arcane Warhead, a powerful device fueled by magical energy that would enable them to destroy Annihilus in their home timeline. Believed to be the former warden of Doom, the Ghost was able to teleport her teammates to the Negative Zone, where they could scheme in secrecy.[2]

Starr stole the work of her teammate Doctor Octopus to create a robotic duplicate of herself and fool the Superior Avengers.[1] Her ruse was exposed when, in confrontation with the original Avengers, her artificial doppelgänger was accidentally destroyed by the Vision.[4] As such, she immediately became a target of the Superior Avengers, led by Killmonger. She sought out Kristoff Vernard and shared the truth about his team of Superior Avengers and their actual plans in hopes of gaining an ally.[1]
