History

The being later known as the Avatar is an aspect of Franklin Richards, the mutant son of the Fantastic Four's Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. Franklin assumed this form when his powers flared out of control when he was frustrated over trying to solve a complex puzzle.[1] The now adult Franklin's mind was muddled and he did not remember who he was. He sought answers to this question. He violently confronted Mister Fantastic, the Thing, and the Human Torch for answers. Probing their minds, he did not find what he was looking for and then used his powers to shut them down. When the Avatar faced his mother, Sue quickly recognized her son and this revelation shocked Franklin enough for his memories to return. Restoring the rest of the Fantastic Four back to normal, the Avatar was warned by his father that if he remained in this form his young body would burn out. Before returning to his proper form, the Avatar used his powers to undo a permanent regression in the Thing's mutation that was caused by Reed earlier.[2]

Years later, the Avatar returned during a period when Franklin's teenaged Earth-6311 counterpart was active on Earth-616. When teen Franklin's powers became unstable, he created manifestations of his past self: the Ego-Spawn, Avatar, and Tattletale. Franklin's teammates in Fantastic Four immediately began looking for a way of restoring Franklin to normal.[3] This later led to battles against Kargul[4] and Vangaard.[5] ultimately ending with Psi-Lord merging his various aspects back into himself once again.[6]
