An Avatar of Life, also known as a Champion of Life, are individuals selected to uphold a cosmic balance between life (also referred to as "purpose") and death, representing the "life" portion. Multiple avatars of life can exist in one given universe at a time and multiple cosmic entities can grant this status. Their antithesis are known as "Avatars of Death".
The most well known of the avatars is Adam Warlock, having become one from the machinations of the In-Betweener under the bidding of Master Order and Lord Chaos in order to balance the cosmic order upset by Thanos's designation as the death avatar from his affiliation with Death. Their action would birth to his negative personality (as well as future counterpart and alternate self), the Magus.[1] Although he rendered this future inactive due to his activities and prevented this fate, the later reinsertion had him re-designated as one of Earth-616's Avatars of Life.[2]
Drax the Destroyer is also a designated Avatar of Life. Unlike Adam Warlock's designation, this came to being as a result of Arthur Douglas's spirit being resurrected into the very being that he is today by Thanos's grandfather and cosmic entity, Kronos, for the purpose of killing Thanos.Other Earth-616 Avatars of Life
