Synopsis for "Holocaust!"

This story is a reprint of the comic
X-Men #26.

Continued from last issue.... Professor X has lost mental contact with the X-Men and through Cerebro, sees that El Tigre has obtained the second part of a mystical amulet that transforms him into the mortal personification of the Mayan god Kukulcán. Held back by a security guard under Kukulcán's control, Cyclops is forced to use his optic blasts to destroy the guard’s gun and push him aside in order to engage his enemy. Cyclops attempts to blast Kukulcán, however it is redirected back at him and he is knocked out.

Kukulcán's hired mercenaries, Toloc and Ramon, enter the room and attempt to take the amulet from Kukulcán's chest so that they might sell it on the black market. The pathetic attempt is easily stopped by Kukulcán by using the power of the sun itself. With his new powers, Kukulcán decides that he must return back to Central America where he will resume the glorious destiny of the Mayan gods. Traveling to the roof of the museum, he creates an energy sphere around himself and uses it to fly back to Central America. While monitoring from afar via his mental powers, the Professor uses his mental powers to revive Angel, Beast, Iceman, and Cyclops and orders them to go after Kukulcán, leaving Ramon and Toloc behind for the police to deal with.

Meanwhile at Metro College, the Professor calls Jean to tell her what's happening with the X-Men. Jean is concerned that the Professor chose to call her on the telephone instead of contacting her telepathically, leaving her to wonder if she is still considered part of the X-Men. Her thoughts are interrupted when Ted Roberts enters the room and introduces her to another student, Calvin Rankin. Jean remembers Rankin during her encounter with him when he became the costumed criminal Mimic. When Rankin inquires if they had met before (having had his memory of his encounter with the X-Men erased) Jean keeps up the ruse, however Calvin secretly begins to doubt the girl’s claim that they have never met.

Jean soon travels to the X-Mansion where the group is briefed on the legends of Kukulcán by the Professor. Xavier tells them that in the past when the Mayan's abused the power of Kukulcán's amulet, it caused a gigantic volcanic eruption that filled their city with molten lava. With the briefing over, Xavier orders the X-Men to travel to San Rico to stop Kukulcán. Jean expresses concern to Scott when she hears that he was injured in battle, however Cyclops has managed to shake off the injuries he sustained battling Kukulcán.

As the X-Men race to San Rico in their jet, Kukulcán has returned to the region and begins to clear it of overgrown vegetation with his vast powers and reveals a gigantic plumed serpent with a gigantic sun stone to further increase his powers. Unearthing the long lost Mayan kingdom, Kukulcán sits upon the pyramid's throne and uses his powers to enslave the people of San Rico.

The X-Men arrive in San Rico and begin traveling through the thick rain forest between them and Kukulcán's kingdom. Along the way, the X-Men use their powers to avoid attacks from the various wild animals in the region. Their arrival does not go unnoticed, as a mystical warning signal alerts Kukulcán of the X-Men's arrival. The group then falls through a pit and is kept at bay by an army of spear wielding natives. However, this proves to only be a minor setback as Cyclops uses his optic blast to dig them a tunnel out of danger, they then knock the natives into their own trap.

Getting past Kukulcán's armed guards, the X-Men try to attack the powerful demi-god but find his powers to be too great for them to face. When the group notices that the sun stone is the source of his power, Iceman uses his ice powers to coat it with a thick layer of ice, blocking the stone from the sun’s rays. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Angel try to keep Kukulcán busy. During the attack, Cyclops accidentally strikes Angel with his optic beams, shaking the group’s leader because his worst nightmare has come true; he's harmed one of his friends with his optic blast. Kukulcán then simply blasts Cyclops aside and attempts to stop Iceman and Beast from further affecting his powers by blocking the sun stone.

This proves to be Kukulcán's undoing as he blasts the base of the plumed serpent causing an underground fault line to quake. The ground then cracks open and swallows up the gigantic statue, cutting off the sun's rays from the crystal and reverting Kukulcán back to the ordinary El Tigre. With the temple crumbling around them, the X-Men tie up El Tigre and flee with Cyclops, carrying the injured Angel. When the others see that Angel is injured, Warren briefly comes around and in a state of delirium accuses Cyclops of blasting him on purpose because he is jealous of Warren's mutual love of Jean before passing out again.

Cyclops knows that this is not true and that Angel is delirious and would like to believe that both Beast and Iceman know this also; however as they walk silently away from the ruins, the X-Men's brooding leader cannot help but doubt.

Synopsis for "Family Legacy"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Avengers #368.

Fabian Cortez sits atop a burning building on the city of Hammer Bay, Genosha while it burns. He holds Quicksilver and Crystal's daughter, Luna. He says that he hopes that her parents and especially her grandfather, Magneto will show up to save her.

Val Cooper works with Henry Peter Gyrich and Nick Fury to create a plan to try to deal with the state of Genosha since the mutates are rebelling violently and burning the city. They feel that the Avengers will try to get into Genosha and feel that they should contain them rather than letting them help out there, feeling that they will only worsen tensions between humans and mutants there.

Nick Fury heads to Avengers Mansion in Manhattan, where he meets with the West Coast Avengers and Avengers and tells them that they are basically not to go to Genosha to stop the violence. The team begins to speak against Nick Fury and they are told that Fabian Cortez is trying to make a "statement". Crystal realizes that this means he must have Luna. She runs and finds Luna with her babysitter. She picks her up and her eyes glow. Crystal lets go of the intruder and it transforms into Mutate 682. This mutant then blows itself up for its country to try to stop the Avengers.

Meanwhile, U.S. Agent and Gyrich head to the X-Mansion along with Jenny Ransome and Philip Moreau. They seek Professor X and Beast's help in going to Genosha to try to contain the violence. Beast is also told that Trish Tilby is in Genosha covering the story firsthand. Quicksilver trains with the rest of the X-Men. Professor X tells them that they are to rendezvous in Genosha in twelve hours.

In Washington, the Avengers recover from the blast by the bomber. Crystal and others are furious that Luna is being used in Cortez's manipulations. They start to head to their Quinjet and Nick Fury tells them that they cannot leave and suddenly U.N. soldiers and Mandroids appear and tell them they are under house arrest.

Professor X, Gyrich, and the others head out by jet to Genosha. While trying to come up with diplomatic plans, they intercept a broadcast by Trish Tilby in Genosha. They see that Fabian Cortez has crowned himself "Head of State" and sits with Luna on his lap. He says that humans, like Luna, must suffer for their transgressions against mutants. He says the humans in Genosha have until dawn of the next day to lay down their arms or he will begin killing all humans in the city.

Synopsis for "Of Kith and Kin"

This story is a reprint of the comic
Avengers #369.

In the SHIELD Helicarrier, Vision and some of the Avengers wait anxiously outside Genosha, which has been encased in a giant energy shield. Here they decide what to try to do to help those inside the city. Inside and deep in the sewers under the city of Hammer Bay, Exodus appears to Fabian Cortez. He forces Cortez to hand over Luna and then kills him. He then takes Luna to celebrate Magneto's triumph.

Outside, the X-Men gather up some of the humans who have been attacked and have stopped some of the mutant attackers. They try to figure out what has caused the city to be encased in the shielding. Suddenly, the Avengers appear and announce that it was Exodus' doing. Both teams join up and decide to help humans from the mutant attackers. Professor X calls them to help him and the others who have been barricaded in the entrance to the sewers by Genoshan Magistrates. Renee Majcomb is shot and then the X-Men appear and save their comrades. They battle most of the mutants and stop them from further damage. Rogue flies up and then is suddenly hit by a psionic attack

Exodus reveals that he attacked her since she turned against Magneto. He then attacks Quicksilver and says that he will slay millions for the suffering that Magneto has had. Jean Grey asks him how he means to kill millions and he says that she will soon find out. Then Vision, outside the shield barrier, realizes that the shield is not a barrier to keep things out but a weapon to crush those inside.

Exodus brings the group outside the sewers to the surface and controls each of their bodies. He then announces to the citizens that the humans must be destroyed and that he will then kill the mutants that have betrayed Magneto. The X-Men and Avengers team up to fight off the mutants who are still attacking and then the others are going to attack Exodus. Exodus finally ends their fighting and begins to bring the shield down on the city. He then holds up Luna as the first human sacrifice to Magneto's legacy. Professor X then attacks him and Exodus stands back up saying he expected that and then the Black Knight slashes him without him expecting that.

The shield stops crushing and then Exodus still recovers. He says that he is beginning a new "war" that will rage on until the mutants reign supreme. He then decides to attack Quicksilver. Black Knight runs over as Exodus disappears and he gives CPR to Quicksilver since he is not breathing. Quicksilver recovers and grabs hold of Luna smiling. Crystal thanks Black Knight for his saving Quicksilver. The next day, Professor X and Captain America sit on the outskirts of the city looking at the sunrise. Jenny Ransome walks up and says that Professor X should not conceal the fact that he is a mutant from the world. He says she is probably not wrong in thinking that.
