Synopsis for "Breakout!: Part 5"

Reprint of the 1st story from
New Avengers #5

Stranded in the Savage Land, Iron Man, Captain America and Spider-Man fight the T-Rex that destroyed their Quinjet. Iron Man finally takes it down by flying directly into its jaws and fights it from the inside. They then search for the others; the others being Luke Cage and Spider-Woman, who was currently being threatened by a short, furry clawed man. Cage recognized the man, but before he could do anything, Spider-Woman shoots him in the face with a bioelectric venom blast, flips him over and slits his throat with his own claws. This does not make Wolverine very happy, but Cage is able to keep them from doing much brawling before they reunite with the rest of the Avengers.

Finding them with the T-Rex carcass, Wolverine explains that The X-Men were contacted by The Scorcher, a very old Spider-Man villain who was trying to go straight. He said that Savage Land Mutates contacted him about breaking Lykos out of the Raft, but he declined. After the Raft was busted open, Wolverine knew it was about Lykos and hopped the first Blackbird to the Savage Land. They’re in the middle of exchanging notes when they’re attacked by a gaggle of mutates, their powers go dead and a mutate with persuasion powers forced them all to sleep.

They wake up later, imprisoned in the chamber of Brainchild, a mutate with incredibly advanced intelligence. Also, they wake up completely naked. Cap demands to speak to Lykos and when he appears, subsequently demands his surrender. Lykos declines. Cap then informs him of the 44 inmates that escaped with him and demands his surrender yet again. Lykos asks Brainchild why he didn’t assume they would be coming after them; Brainchild says they were assured nobody would.

Lykos then goes on a rant Sauron was forced to work for the Weapon X program, hunting down and exterminating other mutants, and he was only locked up because he said no; to which Logan replied, “Wah, wah. Boo-hoo.” Lykos tells Brainchild to kill them all and dump the carcasses, despite Brainchild’s protests to let him use them as guinea pigs. He also says to separate the bodies, saying that there isn’t enough vibranium in the world to save them from S.H.I.E.L.D. if anyone found out they held Stark or Rogers.

Tony, having heard enough, assembles his armor into voice-activated battle-mode and has it blast Lykos and free them. They locate their weapons and costumes and dress as Spider-Woman defends S.H.I.E.L.D. from the other Avengers, saying that S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn’t do this. Mutates attack and the Avengers go into battle as Wolverine hunts down Lykos, who was trying to make a quiet escape. Wolverine’s claws find their mark as he embeds them into Lykos’ chest.

All this did was allow him to siphon off Wolverine’s mutant energy and transform into Sauron. Using his hypnotic powers to stop the Avengers in their tracks, he begins to tell them he was brought to the Savage Land for a reason when a bullet flies through the pterodactyl–man’s head. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents hiding in the bushes are told by Yelena Belova, the Black Widow, the highest ranking agent there, to wipe the entire area clean. No survivors.

Synopsis for "Breakout!: Part 6"

Reprint of the 1st story from
New Avengers #6

As Spider-Woman orders the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to stand down and the Black Widow orders them to fire, Iron Man’s armor begins to charge for a magnetic field and informs him that the files about the Raft incident had finished being analyzed. Of course, it wasn’t the best time to review them. As a lower agent refuses to fire on Captain America, the Widow shoots him in the head and begins firing at the Avengers, and the rest of the agents follow suit.

As Cap yells for no casualties, mainly for Wolverine’s sake, Spider-Woman flies him towards the Window. Claws stretched outward, they would have killed the her if not for Cap’s shield slamming into the back of his neck. Even at low power, Iron Man activates a polar magnetic field which causes all metallic objects to float towards him, including keys, guns, and Wolverine. Seeing they were unarmed and very much outmatched, the agents flee the scene.

S.H.I.E.L.D. says that they have no presence in the Savage Land and the Black Widow, a freelance S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, is not supposed to be in the Savage Land. Considering she and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents just tried to kill them in the Savage Land, Spider-Woman asked her whose orders she was following and what they were doing in the Savage Land. The Widow kept her mouth shut. Spider-Woman goes on to inform her that she has a license to kill and demanded a name. The Widow responds, “I work for the same people you work for.” Before they could interrogate her further, Sauron’s corpse jumps up and breathes fire on the Widow.

Iron Man and Cage are able to knock Sauron out and he transforms back into Lykos. He apparently absorbed some of Wolverine’s healing factor when he transformed; that kept him alive. They decide to hunt down the rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and get a ride back to civilization when Iron Man detects strange readings in the distance. Those readings are the remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. agents doing what they came to the Savage Land to do; enslave the native inhabitants and force them to mine Vibranium.

The Avengers charge into battle as multiple energy blasts fall from the sky, decimating the entire installation. Only Iron Man’s repulsor field saved them from utter destruction. The source of the blasts; the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. Agent Hill, the S.H.I.E.L.D. director, claimed that their own investigation into the Raft breakout led them to the Savage Land and that the destruction of the mining installation “was the appropriate response.” As for who was behind it all, they merely said the investigation was ongoing. She says the helicarrier would fly them back to New York and thanks them on behalf of the Weapon X director for retrieving Sauron. But, “For the record, we did ask you to stand down. You ignored us.”

When they are alone, Iron Man tells the team that there’s another problem. The S.H.I.E.L.D. files given to them about the Raft had been tampered with, so he compared them with the files from the old Avengers database. Over a dozen of the prisoners had been declared legally dead, yet still imprisoned. This meant that S.H.I.E.L.D. was not only stockpiling super-weapons, they were stockpiling super-villains. Whoever is behind it knows the Avengers are onto them, but the Avengers don’t know who they are. Even if they do nothing, the real bad guys know they know something. Cap offers anyone the option of backing out of the Avengers now, if they feel they can’t handle it. Tony then offers a spot to Wolverine, which makes Cap want a private word.

IRON MAN: Cap, you said this team came together by … fate. Your word. Just like the original Avengers, right? Yes. Well the original Avengers didn’t truly come together until that one last ingredient came into the mix. We needed that one last ingredient. And then when we found you … you were that one thing. But for this team, for this situation, for this world … he is you. He is our missing ingredient.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: Tony, he’s a murderer.

IM: He’s a samurai warrior. After what happened to Wanda, after what we know happened here today, we can’t afford not to have him. We’re going to need someone to go to that place that we can’t. And you know exactly what I mean.

Cap reluctantly agrees to allow Logan a spot on the team

In a hidden location, the Black Widow lies in a hospital bed. She is horribly scarred by Sauron’s attack. Her employer offers her a chance to reap vengeance on the Avengers for what they had done to her, and she agrees.

Synopsis for "The Redoubtable Return of Crusher Creel!"

Reprint of the 1st story from
Avengers #183

Ms. Marvel is being officially inducted into the team to replace the Scarlet Witch while she’s away. There are a few hurdles, however, as the heroine objects to being fingerprinted by Agent Gyrich’s team as part of the new security measures. (In her civilian identity as Carol Danvers, her prints are already on file due to her former job at NASA. She is concerned about these files could be cross-referenced and therefore expose her true name.) Tony Stark is present and suggests that Gyrich use retinal scans to ID the team members instead of fingerprints. Reluctantly, Gyrich agrees to this.

A short while later in his private quarters, Stark happens to look out the window and see the garbage truck out front is having difficulties. The truck’s lifter can’t haul the amount of waste (mostly from Stark’s tech labs) being tossed out. Suiting up as Iron-Man, he comes to the workers’ aid by emptying the waste bin into the truck himself.

After completing its route, the garbage truck heads to a dump in New Jersey to unload. After the maintenance men have departed, a strange occurrence takes place: splintered shards of glass flying towards each other and combining into form the body of Crusher Creel, the Absorbing Man!

Elsewhere, Steve Rogers (Captain America) pays Sam Wilson (Falcon) a visit to invite him to join the Avengers. Sam is reluctant to join up and more than a little resentful of the reason he’s being asked to join. He derisively suggests to Steve that he ought to change his superhero name to “the Token.” In the end, though, Sam can’t refuse his good friend down.

In Hoboken, Creel breaks into a clothing store after hours when only one employee, the hapless Sandy Herkowitz, is still there. Creel steals clothes to wear and breaks open the floor vault to produce some cash. He mutters to Sandy that it’s just enough money to swing passage for two on a South America-bound freighter. Having had enough of combat with superheroes, Creel plans on relocating to some out-of-the-way location where he can take over with ease… and intends to bring Sandy along for the ride “for company”, whether she wants to or not.

The next day, Wanda and Pietro are about to set sail on a steamer along with Django Maximoff. Wanda places a call to the Vision. Then, just as they are boarding the ship, Clint (Hawkeye) shows up to give her a farewell present and see them off. Wanda gives him a friendly hug.

Now in desperate need of gainful employment, Hawkeye stops by a nearby greasy spoon diner for a cup of coffee. By coincidence, Creel, with Sandy in tow, stops in the same diner and literally bumps into Clint, spilling his coffee. Unaware of who he is, a Clint takes a swing at him only to hurt his fist as Creel turns into formica! The local sailors and dock workers realize who Creel is and decide to save Thor some trouble, only to get schooled themselves. Clint phones the Avengers and then quickly changes into costume to take on the bad guy.

The Absorbing Man easily fends off Hawkeye's attacks but he’s kept distracted until the Avengers (Iron-Man, Vision, Beast, Wasp and Ms. Marvel) arrive. With Sandy in tow, Creel runs for the freighter. The Avengers, including Hawkeye, follow but are in for a surprise: Creel has absorbed the full power of the freighter’s turbine engine and emerges from the bowels of the ship as a massively powered behemoth and ready to take on the entire team.
