Synopsis for "The Power of Babel!"

Returning to the US following their battle against the Star-Stalker in Vietnam, the Avengers turn Mantis's alleged father, Zodiac's Libra, over to the authorities. At their mansion, they reflect on recent events until they are visited by Rick Jones's girlfriend, Lou-Ann Savannah, who warns them about Thanos before passing out.

The story then recaps the events of Captain Marvel #27-32, summarizing the Avengers' involvement in Captain Marvel's ongoing struggle against Thanos.

After flying into space with the Zodiac's starship and a modified Quinjet, the Avengers defend the Earth against Thanos's invasion force. They manage to destroy the spacecraft that enables the aliens to understand each other, making them unable to effectively communicate and give the Avengers the edge to destroy the entire armada.

Upon returning to Earth, the Avengers rejoice on the Mansion's rooftop, not suspecting that Thanos is lurking nearby, gloating to himself about how their mere involvement with his space-pawns has doomed the planet Earth!

Notes

Continuity Notes[]

  • The Thanos War continues in Captain Marvel #33.
  • Black Panther mentions the alien fleet was detected by the orbiting station Starcore, who alerted the Avengers.
  • The Swordsman returns to active duty this issue, recovering from his torture in Avengers #123 as well as his infected wound sustained during his battle with Valkyrie in Avengers #117.
  • Captain America returns to the team this issue. He had been absent since Avengers #121.
  • After launching from New York City, the Avengers travel to a location very close to the Sun where they engage the alien fleet in a running battle that takes them all back to Earth. Based on what is seen in the story, it seems to take the Avengers only minutes to travel to the Sun, a distance of almost 93 million miles, and then only minutes more to return to Earth. Given that it takes light eight and one-third minutes to travel from the Sun to Earth, this implies that the Avengers (and the alien fleet) must have been traveling through space at about light speed (or a high percentage of light speed) the whole time.

Publication Notes[]

  • This issue also contains a letters page, Avengers Assemble. Letters are published from Becky Miller, Rick Fleishauer, Vallard Eding, and Jana C. Hollingsworth.
