Azania, officially the Republic of Azania, is a country in Africa. It is located south of the technologically advanced nation of Wakanda.

Azania is widely known for its aggressive Apartheid policies.[1]

History

Revolt against Azanian Apartheid[]

Flag of Azania

The impoverished and suppressed Black citizens of Azania united to revolt against the Azania's Apartheid government, under the belief that Africa's Great Panther Spirit was leading them to freedom. The Prime Minister of Azania denied the notion of the Great Panther Spirit, however, and accused the rebels of secretly working with the communists.[2]

One Black political prisoner in Azania inherited the spirit of the Panther Totem, which left its then host the King of Wakanda, T'Challa, transforming him into a brutal half-panther half-man. This man escaped custody after mauling two prison guards, and continued to leave a trail of bodies across the country, concentrating on White communities and key figures of power. His victims included real estate developers, the clergy, and even the governor. In response, military leader General Magnus Moorecx deployed the superhuman team known as the Supremacists, and publicly accused the nation of Wakanda of supporting the rebel cause.[2]

Though T'Challa's battle with the Supremacists was not able to completely topple the Azanian regime, Wakanda did subsequently begin to fund rebellion in the country.[3]

Wakanda's enemies[]

When an alliance formed between Wakandan revolutionaries The People, the Nigandan Army, and foreign agents Zeke Stane and Andrea and Andreas Fenris - all, in truth, gathered by Wakanda's enemy Klaw - a laboratory in Yster Pal in Central Azania was used as their base of operations. Here Doctor Faustus experimented on the kidnapped Asira Davin, twisting her into believing she was a vessel of the twice-risen god Sefako and causing trouble for Wakanda in Birnin Benhazin near the Wakanda-Azanian border. This lab also allowed Stane to experiment with reverbium and create the Hand of Calliope, which prevented Klaw from dissipating completely and focused his power, which he tested on a Wakandan-funded rebel camp in Southern Azania; the true purpose of the device, however, was to restore his sister Julia's mind as a sound projection.

The Midnight Angels Ayo and Aneka staged an incursion into Azania in search of Asira undercover as escorts, but were caught unaware by Klaw's involvement, and subsequently became more subjects of Faustus' human experimentation. The activation of the Hand of Calliope drowning out all sound in the facility, however, provided the pair with a chance to escape right as the rest of the Angels arrived in Azania. The engagement of the Angels and Azanian rebels with the Azanian military allowed T'Challa the chance to lead Klaw away from the battle, where he was broken to pieces by Eliot Franklin's reverbium disruptors.[4][5]

Notes

  • This country was based on Apartheid South Africa; although Azania is a fictional country, the name has been used in various parts of southeastern tropical Africa. In its first appearance, it was said to be located "at the southern tip of Africa".[7]

Trivia

  • Azania's flag features the Southern Cross, a constellation visible south of the equator and commonly featured on flags of nations in the Southern Hemisphere. However, having been retroactively moved to the border of Wakanda, Azania is actually in the Northern Hemisphere.
