Baron von Ritter was a Nazi operative who was active during World War II. Stationed in Istanbul, Turkey during the war he earned the name of the "Bloody Butcher of Istanbul" due to his constant torturing of his prisoners. In the fall of 1944 he captured an American engineer in order to steal his plans and gain a tactical advantage for the Nazis in the still-neutral country of Turkey.

The engineers captured prompted the American authorities to send the Human Torch and Toro to rescue him. Tracking the engineer to Ritter's estate they found him bring whipped by Ritter's men in the horse stables. Freeing the engineer, the Torch and Toro then confronted Ritter. Prevented from communicating the plans to his superiors, Ritter then ordered his men to attack while he fled.

The Torch and Toro caught up to Rigger just as he was escaping by plane and used their flame powers to create a downdraft and force him to land. Fleeing, Ritter realized that capture was immanent and instead decided to kill himself. Before the Torch could stop him Ritter shot himself in the head, dying instantly.[1]
