Batman Bates was a former professional baseball player who had a record for consecutive home runs. After retirement, he had disappeared from the public eye. The record was anticipated to be broken by Slugger McGirk during a game attended by the Power Pack children who spotted him at the stadium and tried to get his autograph. He brushed them off, however, and dropped a dynamite blasting cap which they ultimately determined to be from explosives he had rigged to the fireworks at the stadium that would be set off if the record was broken. They had to scramble to stop the explosion from happening and Bates was arrested by the police.[1]
