Synopsis for "Lake of Fire"

Punisher teams up with the replacement Batman (who later becomes Azrael whose brutal tactics compliment one another. This was the first DC/Marvel crossover after a long period of time after the X-Men/Teen Titans one.

Batman (Jean-Paul Valley) had a dream that he was suffering in Hell and being judged by St. Dumas. Suddenly, Valley woke up and believed that he had received that dream due to exchanging his Order of St. Dumas robes for Batman's attire, but also felt confused as he believed that the original Batman was on the side of St. Dumas as he "fought evil." Next, Valley decided to search for a criminal named Cass Rimer by attempting to confront his associate Tony Bressi.

Meanwhile, the Punisher was in Gotham City searching for Jigsaw. Frank stopped by at a bar in an attempt to collect information from the patrons. Moments later, a fight broke out between Frank and the bar patrons. After Frank had defeated all but one thug, he held the last thug at gunpoint and questioned him of Russo's whereabouts, learning that the gangster was located at St. Ludger's Church in Downtown Gotham. At the Kochman Building, Rimer and Jigsaw were watching tapes of the Punisher and discussing a trap they had set for the Punisher at the church. The Punisher arrived at the church and encountered a woman who appeared to be a nun. When the woman saw Frank, she splashed him with what appeared to be holy water, but it was, in fact, some sort of drug that disoriented the Punisher. Next, the woman lit the church on fire and fled, getting inside of Jigsaw's car. The Punisher attempted to make his way out of the church, but got lost and collapsed. Suddenly, Batman (Valley) came in, smashing through the windows, and rushed out of the church with Frank. After escaping the church, Batman and the Punisher immediately recognized each other. Frank knew that Batman was after Bressi and that he was his best chance of taking down both Russo and Bressi. Batman added that Frank was also his best chance at finding the rocket fuel formula that Rimer was suspected of stealing from the Pentagon. Batman agreed to be allies with the Punisher until Bressi is caught and begin to hunt the gunslinger down afterwards.

Later on, Batman and the Punisher drove in the Batmobile to Minsk Baths which Frank suspected was where two potential customers from Russia who intend to buy the rocket formula from Bressi may be. When they arrived at the building, the security refused to let them in. As a result, Batman and the Punisher beat them up and moved on to check the building for the Russian customers. The Russians eventually suspect Frank and Batman and start to fight them. Batman threw a gas mask to Frank before throwing a gas grenade to the floor, knocking the Russians unconscious. Next, Batman summoned St. Dumas in hope for assistance. However, St. Dumas told him to look for "fiery water." Afterwards, Batman had noticed that Frank was gone. Batman got into the Batmobile while Frank watched from the rooftop of the building. As Batman drove away angrily, he decided to use the computers to search for information on Bressi. Next, Batman went to Kochman Building to look for Bressi. When he was inside, he saw Jigsaw and Rimer and got into a fight with them, their bullets, bouncing off of his armor. Batman tackled Rimer and attempted to beat information out of him, learning that the two criminals planned to mix water with the formula to make rocket fuel. Then, Batman threw Rimer to a table and rushed out, knowing that he only had ten minutes to stop their plan.

Batman went to the Gotham Reservoir Conduct in an attempt to stop Rimer's and Jigsaw's plan. However, the primer that Rimer and Jigsaw had placed exploded, causing the water to combust. Meanwhile, back at Kochman Building, Jigsaw was on the phone with an associate, instructing him to inform the mayor that he was willing to fix the reservoir for a price. Suddenly, Frank was behind Russo, holding a gun to his head. A fight broke out between the two, with Russo shooting at Frank, with one bullet hitting him in the shoulder, and Frank throwing his knife at Russo, but missing. Russo attempted to flee combat, but Frank tackled him, continuing the fight, exchanging blows, until Frank knocked Russo off of the building. Before Russo could plummet to his death, Batman intervened, swinging from his grappling hook and saving him, before tying him up and leaving him for the police. After Batman left Jigsaw behind, Joker appeared and cut him free from the ropes. Meanwhile, Batman returned to the rooftop to confront the Punisher. A fight broke out between the two, with the two exchanging blows, until Batman knocked the Punisher to the ground. The Punisher drew out his sidearm and shot at Batman, but did not damage him. Then, Batman charged at the Punisher, who pulled a gas grenade from his utility belt, activating it, before taking cover. Afterwards, Frank fled the battle to confront Jigsaw and Batman attempted to talk to St. Dumas, claiming that he had failed, but with no response, before jumping off of the building into the night.
