After her death, Bilitis's spirit was apparently welcomed by the Olympian gods. She was granted immortality and accompanied the Olympian gods when they briefly relocated to the planet Venus while under the rule of the goddess Venus. In 1948, Venus had gone to Earth and taken up a job as a model and editor of Beauty Magazine. Seeking out models to appear in an article featuring the 10 most beautiful women in the world, Venus returned to the planet that was her namesake and gathered women from there. Among those was Bilitis, who participated in the photo shoot before returning to Venus.[1] She was also called by Venus in a effort to save the world from the hands of a mad scientist, who was spiteful for the love of a woman.[2]

Notes

  • In difference to other handmaidens, who were historical or mythical figure, Bilitis was a modern creation of a Belgian poet named Pierre Louÿs (in 1895). He created the character of "Bilitis" to serve as supposed author of his book of erotic poems called "The The Songs of Bilitis", made in the manner of the greek poet Sappho. The book beame famous and the character of Bilitis influenced the lesbian movement in the XX century.
  • Pierre Louÿs also gave a backstory to Bilitis, being a cortesan who was born in the city of Pamphylia (modern Turkey), then had romantic misdventures and became a courtesan of Cyprus. He also claimed the discovery of her tomb in Cyprus and published "original" poems in ancient greek, to make her more credible, fooling even experts.
