| HistoryText = Now in his twilight years, the man known as the Black Fox has had a long, illustrious career as a professional burglar and jewel thief. In recent years, while robbing a Manhattan penthouse, the Fox was captured by its owner, the Red Ghost (Ivan Kragoff) and his Super-Apes. Kragoff ordered the Fox to help the Apes steal components for his power-enhancing Cosmicizer. Unwilling to be the Ghost's pawn, the Fox soon fled from the Super-Apes, and was only saved from their wrath by Spider-Man (Peter Parker). The Fox's next heist angered a major insurance company, and they hired Symkarian mercenary Silver Sable and her Wild Pack to hunt him down; luckily for the Fox, Spider-Man deplored the Wild Pack's reckless tactics and prevented them from capturing the thief. The Fox even persuaded Spider-Man to let him go free with a heartbreaking story about his (possibly fictional) wife and children, although the web-slinger stole the jewels back and handed them over to Sable. Black Fox later stole the Eye of Carnelia ruby to finance his long-dreamed-of retirement to the French Riviera, but his plans were derailed when the mercenary Chance (Nicholas Powell) murdered Fox's favorite fence Andre Boullion at the master assassin Foreigner's behest. Chance targeted the Fox as well, but was defeated by Spider-Man; unable to fence the Eye, the Fox returned the ruby and claimed the reward.

The trio defeated the cultists and recovered the Egg, but Doom spitefully destroyed the Trask Diamond, and Spider-Man handed Fox over to the police.

After a short stint in jail, the Fox was hired by the Borovian royal family to rob fellow thief Felicia Hardy (Black Cat) of a necklace stolen from them. The reformed Hardy chased the Fox, but he escaped with the necklace. In revenge for Silver Sable's past pursuit of him, Fox tried to loot the Symkarian embassy while Sable and her Wild Pack were away, but Sable's resourceful teenage cousin Anna foiled him in humiliating fashion. Some time later, the Fox tried to loot the site of a subterranean monster attack, but Ant-Man (Eric O'Grady) stole his booty. O'Grady sold the stolen jewels to a fence, who cheated him by paying a fraction of their value, but when the Fox tracked O'Grady down, they teamed up to extort the jewels' true value from the fence. The Fox befriended O'Grady, and when SHIELD arrested O'Grady, Fox broke into SHIELD's Helicarrier to rescue him; when SHIELD agents cornered him, Fox claimed to be wired to a nuclear bomb, but O'Grady, having just lied his way out of criminal charges and unwilling to be associated with a known criminal, called his bluff, resulting in the Fox's capture. A contrite O'Grady later gave the imprisoned Fox schematics of the carrier's security systems to facilitate Fox's escape.

History

The Black Fox is an audacious jewel thief who has had a long criminal career in the United States and Europe. His crimes have brought him repeatedly into conflict with the hero Spider-Man.[4]

Thumb

He even tried to escape Spider-Man by moving to Los Angeles, where he occupied the mansion of a rich couple while they were on vacation in Switzerland. Unfortunately Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, was in Los Angeles at the same time for a book signature event and defeated him again, although he had mercy and let the Black Fox avoid prison.[5]

Spider-Man finally recognized that he had a soft spot for older men due to his memories of Uncle Ben, and that was why he repeatedly let the Black Fox go. Resolving these issues, he captured and incarcerated Black Fox.[6]

Black Fox later hired Black Cat to steal a painting. It's revealed during this time that Black Fox was the one who trained Walter Hardy[2] and Felicia[3].
