The Black Knight is a title held by the great wizard Merlin's champion, who was created to protect Camelot, the British Isles and Earth-616.
Merlin melted down the Starstone which was created during the Big Bang from primeval matter left from the previous universe.[1] He used the metal to forge the Ebony Blade, the Ebony Chalice, the Ebony Shield, and the Ebony Staff. The weapons were given to his new champion the Black Knight.[2][3]

Garrett Castle is a Black Knight museum with various exhibits on the Black Knights, including the body of Sir Percy. There is a long line of paintings of the Knights including, according to the curator, "Sir Ralston and Sir Eobar or lesser known knights like Sir William and Sir Henry."[4]

Eight former Black Knights
It was later revealed Sir Percy of Scandia was he was not the first Black Knight and that eight knights had carried the Ebony Blade before him, the last being King Arthur's cousin Sir Reginald. Each one had been driven mad by the sword and had to be killed until it was decided there were only three people who could take the sword, but King Arthur and Merlin were needed in other capacities, so the "burden" fell to Sir Percy who accepted despite knowing the risks.[5]

Merlin summoned Sir Percy of Scandia to Camelot, where he acted as Merlin's agent, publicly played the fop. Privately, however, he used the identity of the Black Knight to defend the realm of King Arthur from any threats.[2]
Following the death of Sir Percy his son found the sword and vowed to wield it like his father. The sword was passed down through the centuries by Percy's descendants. No matter how noble the person the sword would eventually corrupt the wielder.[6]

Notes[]
- Sir Percy of Scandia originally told Dane Whitman that Merlin had created the Ebony Blade,[18] it was later revealed that it was Percy himself who had actually forged the sword and three other items from the Starstone at Merlin's direction.[2] This was disregarded by Symbiote Spider-Man: King in Black #3 and King in Black: Black Knight #1, which depicted Merlin as having forged the Ebony Blade by himself, but Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade #1 reaffirmed that it was Percy who forged the Ebony Blade.
