The Black Legion, or Black Legions, of Valusia[1] were the Valusian elite troop.[2]
The commander of the Black Legion was a position second only to the king of Valusia.[7]
History
Vonndhar's command[]
Thirty years before Kull's rule, Vonndhar was the songs-praised commander of the infamous Black Legion, leading many campaigns against the foes of Valusia. Vonndhar was slain in battle with the Commorians (though he was resurrected by Erlik and recruited into the god's service).[8]
Kull's command[]
After fighting exceptionally well as a gladiator, Kull of Atlantis joined the Valusian army, before ascending as the commander of the Black Legion.
Later, traitorious poet Ridondo, plotting with Kaanuub, Ducalon and Enaros (who wished to become commander of the Black Legion) to have Kull slay King Borna, lied to Kull about Borna intending to abolish the Black Legion, thus causing Kull to challenge and slay Borna. Unexpected to the conspirators, Kull then took the crown for himself.[1]
Enaros' command[]
After adventurer Zarkus of Zarfhaana saved Kull from a maddened bear, Kull offered him a place within the Black Legion. As the Lurker Beneath the Earth, a monstrous worm living in Qar (the ancient city lying beneath the City of Wonders) and manipulated by Malakar, Kull soon took his Black Legion and Red Slayers to the subterranean ruins, where Zarkus slew Malakar and retrieved Kull after he was seemingly slain by the Lurker. Zarkus himself died here from the Poisons Flowers that had caused the fall of Qar's people.[6]
Kull led a sea campaign against the Lemurian pirates, with Brule, Kuthulos, and the Black Legion, including Latos. Returning home with only two out of five ships, the Valusians were stranded on an unnamed island in unmapped waters. The Black Legion first was confronted to the Cult of the Leopard's warriors. They were then hosted in the castle of Dom Vinsala. As conflict erupted between the enslaved locals and Vinsala, Kull ended up turning his Black Legion against the unreasonable Vinsala. After Vinsala was slain by Demontur, the freed locals repaired the Valusian vessels and the Black Legion returned to the City of Wonders.[9]
Eventually, with the help of "Ardyon" (Thulsa Doom), the Rebel Four attacked Kull in his quarters, with the renfort of Black Legionnaires turned by Enaros. Enaros and many Legionnaires were slain by Kull, who was defeated nevertheless.[10]
Bundal's command[]
After Enaros' demise, and "Ardyon" becoming king of Valusia, Bundal was appointed commander of the Black Legion.[11]
When Kull and Brule infiltrated the Royal Palace to assassinate Thulsa Doom, they were attacked by the Black Legion, now loyal to "Ardyon", and many died to the two barbarians.[12]
Cyrton's command[]
During war against Commoria, the Valusian vanguard's camp was surrounded by night and attacked at dawn. Half of the Black Legion was routed, and the other half fought to the death, with only King Kull surviving, left to fight ghosts,[3] then a surviving Commorian, before teaming up with him against corpses pillagers.[13]
After the wars against Commaria, Cyrton, commander of the Black Legion, manipulated by Senator and Baron Tulna, claimed the crown on the basis Kull had claimed it similarly. Tricked on his sense of honor, and to avoid dissent among the Legion, Kull accepted the challenge. Kull crippled and beheaded Cyrton, as he didn't trusted Cyrton's ambition, despite being manipulated, to have died, and considered Cyrton could still cause dissent in the Legion.[7]
Ranking[]
The Black Legion, as well as other branches of the Valusian forces, seemingly used "general" and "commander" indistinctively.[14][15] The commander of the Black Legion was a position second only to the king of Valusia.[7]See Also
