Chadwick Boseman was scheduled to reprise his lead role as Black Panther for this film, before his death on August 28, 2020. Following Boseman's death, there were no plans to recast the role nor to use CGI to replicate his likeness in any capacity.
Originally slated to be released on May 6, 2022, this film was later pushed back to July 8, 2022. The release date was later taken by Thor: Love and Thunder, pushing this film back to November 11, 2022, taking the release date of The Marvels.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige stated that the primary goal of the sequel has always been to further the mythology of Wakanda by exploring its different subcultures and characters.
