Quote1 It's not that I'm not grateful that she's here. I am. Even I know it's not a good time for me to be alone. And that hasn't really changed. Still. Sometimes a girl needs a little space. And maybe a few secrets too. Quote2

Synopsis for "The Source (Part 1 of 1)"

When Yelena oversees Lucy's combat training with Anya and notes some improvement, she sees Natasha heading out after declining a sparring session with the girls, and leaves the girls alone to intercept Natasha. Reminding her they promised to stop keeping their own counsel, Natasha begrudgingly divulges that she's going to meet a source unreceptive to new faces; voicing how painful it was to reveal that. Riding over on her motorcycle, Natasha recognizes that she's grateful to have Yelena, but still feels a need for some space with her own thoughts; and a few secrets. Arriving at her destination, she greets her source, Maxi, who invites her to her storeroom; upgraded since last she was around.

Retrieving an envelope ordered by Natasha, Maxi assures her it allows the user to disappear and start a new life. Thankful, Natasha then brings up a new subject related to Apogee, as her last encounter with him felt like a big part of the puzzle was overlooked, so Maxi directed her to The Twins. As they intermingle high-society with freaky circus, but his description of their characters give Natasha what she needs to plan an encounter, and thanks Maxi before heading home. However, her longing Stevie and James has her hire Maxi to locate them for her, and she affirms her assurance to want to find them.

Back at the Web, Anya finishes her sparring with Lucy by webbing the former to a wall for a crack about Anya's webbing. After Natasha returns, she tells Yelena their next lead is at a formal event, so she orders Yelena wear a formal dress. Seeing the Widows leave in fancy dresses, Anya invites Lucy to pizza and TV while they are home alone. At the venue, the widows find the Twins and make an attempt for civil conversation; not wanting to ruin more of their dresses. Asking Liv and Lars about Apogee, the Twins reveal their awareness of her pondering something amiss with the defeated villain before engaging in a fight.

As the sickly framed Lars fights Yelena, the hulking Liv grapples with Natasha until her body mass suddenly decreases, noticing the very mass regrow in Lars's muscles. With the Twins able to share body mass between them and Yelena now at Lars's mercy, Natasha attempts to kill Liv to force Lars to surrender his mass, allowing Yelena to render him unconscious and free her to help Natasha counter Liv now heavily muscular. The Widows fight Liv in growing aggression, forcing her to take more body mass from Lars until he is nearly dead. Seeing Lars emaciated, Liv stops seeing the harm she brought her brother and both return to their baseline body types, with the Widows demanding their intel.

The Twins apologize as they couldn't resist the chance to fight them, and openly share their intel. They direct the Widows to an upcoming Golden Gate Gala, an exclusive event which also hides unsavory undertones for superhumans, so the Twins are happy to share the details knowing it will be a matter of time before they are sought after by the very ones abusing and exploiting other superhumans. As Natasha thanks them, they also reveal Apogee's involvement was compulsory and he is alive; both details Natasha will aim to correct.

After the Widows take their leave, Natasha pokes at Yelena's stoicism that she cares for people. The Twins, while the enjoyed fighting the Widows, have petty feelings from losing so they plan a revenge on them. Calling a blocked number, the recipient answers reminding Liv that their number was for emergencies only. The twins acknowledge the fact, but tell the recipient that they sent them details about a problem soon to come. Inquiring the twins, they inform them that two threats (both widows) will come for them soon.
