History

Blackworld, as dubbed by the Asgardians, was a primitive planet located in the eastern rim of the Black Galaxy.[2] In preparation for the coming Fourth Celestial Host, the Asgardian patriarch Odin selected Blackworld for a complex scheme. Presumably through telepathic manipulation,[3] Odin guided the Rigellian Rigellian Grand Commissioner to task his fiancée Tana Nile with the acquisition of a specimen of Ego the Living Planet for use in terraforming inhospitable planets.

Tana ventured into the Black Galaxy where Ego was located and extracted from his surface a living slab of stone and earth. With the stone contained, Tana sped to the galaxy's eastern rim, landing on Blackworld. She released the stone on its surface and beamed it with an energy blast that activated the specimen's innate power. The stone grew and changed its shape into a humanoid being with a crystalline surface that Tana would dub Ego Prime. The creature began to emanate energy discharges which evolved the environment around it, rendering it Earth-like and evolving the Neanderthal-like inhabitants of Blackworld into primitive humans in the process. The evolutionary rays radiating from Ego-Prime also proved to quickly accelerate the development of the Blackworlders, resulting in the appearance of more civilized and constructed medieval villages within hours. Tana tried to stop the creature, but it too had evolved and escaped.[2] Ego-Prime also absorbed the life essence from Blackworlders, increasing his power. Many died during the acceleration, including any who directly faced Ego-Prime.[3] Because of this, the survivors lived in terror of the creature, whom they only knew as the unseen entity "Him."[4]

In the meantime, Asgard had become under attack by the Mangog. Odin teleported harvest goddess Sif and her bodyguard Hildegarde to Blackworld, supposedly for Sif's safety. In reality, Sif's presence was part of Odin's plan. Sif and Hildegarde made their way through Blackworld, beginning their journey near a village whose inhabitants had barricaded themselves to hide from "Him."[5] The two eventually met Silas Grant, the captain of a sailboat from a region that had developed to 19th century level technology.[6] Unlike other Blackworlders, Silas retained memories of his pre-transfromation life and his subsequent "evolved" incarnations, recalling how the environment would constantly change in the blink of an eye. With Silas, Sif and Hildegarde returned to the village only to find it evolved into a city similar to Manhattan during the 1930s. In this city, the three encountered Tana Nile as she was trying to stop Ego-Prime.[4] Ego-Prime's rampage further caused the acceleration of the environment, evolving the surroundings to the 1960s.[7] As Tana explained the origin of the creature, Ego-Prime's acceleration hurled Blackworld into the verge of a nuclear war, culminating in a devastating explosion. The power of the detonation, combined with Ego-Prime's, teleported Grant, Tana, Sif and Hildegarde to Earth, the process having been presumably subconsciously aided by Sif's godly power and knowledge of Earth, further explaining Odin's actions.[2] The subsequent fate of Blackworld and its inhabitants is unknown.[3]
