New Avengers Marvel Salutes the U.S. Military Vol 1 7

The newest issue of the Military Exclusive series brings in new writer Marc Sumerak and new artist Pere Perez, but it continues the loose continuity started by Stuart Moore over the last couple of issues. The Hulk - last seen fleeing the scene at the end of #6 - is found in the Military's Yuma Proving Grounds, and he is not happy. Nick Fury and Tony Stark put the call out to every available hero. The first people to arrive are two Soldiers wearing the Stark Personal Armor System (introduced in #6). Next on the scene are Wolverine and the X-Men, soon followed by practically every hero in the Marvel Universe. Among them is the new Captain America - Bucky Barnes - since Steve Rogers' death was acknowledged back in #5. With the return to…

Spider-Woman, Spider-Woman, does whatever a Spider uh... Well that doesn't really have the same ring to it now does it?

And lo, there shall be an ending!
Sheesh, it seems like piling through both volumes of Essential Spider-Woman took forever! But I'm done! Done done done! In going over the old Spider-Woman series, it's interesting to note just how many weird characters were created for the series whom you hardly see anymore. Which I suppose is just as well, characters like the Needle, and Daddy Longlegs were just fringing on the ridiculous. They were interesting characters for one-off stories, but if they made regular appearances.. Well.. Could you see these characters as being a driving force in an epic series like Secret Invasion or Civil War? Nah, me either.
The other interesting thing is how much they've retconned Spider-Woman's past, present, and futur…

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I thought the movie was great! I'd heard from reviews that it was crap like X-Men: The Last Stand, but it wasn't at all. The plot was excellent and they didn't change the characters TOO much, with an awesome fight scene at the end and cameos by Storm, Quicksilver, Beast and Banshee. Emma Frost and Xavier made appearances which got me excited as well! Be sure to see it if you are a Marvel fan, and even if you aren't it's a good movie anyway. That's my 2 cents! On vacation!

So folks, so just letting you know for the next little while I'm on vacation, so my regular updates are not going to happen.... I'm off visiting my folks on the west coast, *however* I might cheat a little and pop into the local comic book shop in the area and pick up some things (I'm in a little place called Courtnay, on Vancouver Island, they have this comic book shop called the Sanctum Sanctorium. Which is kind of quaint because it's this itty-bitty shot within a shop, the place is a used book and CD store with a comic book shop inside in the back corner... Yeah it's odd.) So I might pick up some Trades while I'm out here and read 'em and kill two birds with one stone and write summaries.

Until then, I'm going to do my usual thing... Whi…

New Avengers Marvel Salutes the U.S. Military Vol 1 6

Stuart Moore tackles his third Military Special and does something new for this series - he creates a continuity. "The Spirit of America" (#5) told the story of the Matthews siblings, California National Guard Soldier Danny and his sister stationed in Iraq. As mentioned in the end of #5, "Fireline" follows Danny to his new assignment fighting forest fires. It's been a while since we've seen Danny, evidenced by his rank. He was referred to as Private in #5, and is now recently promoted to Sergeant (assuming he was actually a Private First Class in #5, that means he's been promoted twice since). In this issue, the Hulk is rampaging through the California forests and inadvertently causes a huge forest fire. Iron Man and Spider-Man, who are no…

New Avengers Marvel Salutes the U.S. Military Vol 1 5

Stuart Moore wrote the fourth (and my personal favorite) issue in this series, "Letters Home." That issue must have been pretty well received, because he is the first writer to do a second issue of these specials. In this issue, we see Iron Man and Wolverine viewing videotaped messages from the dearly departed Captain America. It seems that before he died, Cap met a young Soldier, PFC Matthews, overseas. Matthews' brother is also a Soldier, working in the states on a top secret communications project. This project has gotten the attention of the evil terrorist organization A.I.M. Cap's mission for the Avengers - to protect the two young Soldiers from the terrorists. Iron Man takes Black Widow and Wonder Man to LA to look into the communica…

New Avengers Marvel Salutes the U.S. Military Vol 1 4

This is an interesting teaming of heroes. Cap is the sole Avenger, as the rest of the team is spending the holidays with loved ones. Hydra has taken over a military sattelite. Besides having a weapons system, the sattelite is also used for Soldiers and their loved ones to send e-mails to and from overseas. To stop Hydra from using the weapon, and make sure the Soldiers e-mails get through, Cap has to enlist the help of the Silver Surfer (in FF2 this summer), Ghost Rider (movie in theaters soon), and the Punisher. While this may sound as corny as #2, it is actually not, and the way the story is told is terriffic. It is actually narrated by 3 of the individual heroes 'letters home.' Each character's sub-plot is handled by a different artist …

New Avengers Marvel Salutes the U.S. Military Vol 1 3

With one winner and one loser so far, I wasn't sure what to expect with #3. This time guest starring the X-Men (X3 was on it's way to theaters), I liked this one even better than the first. Spider-Man returns to Avengers Tower to find the team gone and the place trashed. It seems Kang had controlled the X-Men and sent them to attack the Avengers. When that plot failed, Kang went back in time. The Avengers and X-Men followed him back, where he is attempting to kill Captain America before he ever gets frozen. Kang's theory is, no Cap, no Avengers, thereby making it easy for him to conquer the future earth. This one has alot of action, something the first two lacked somewhat. Great art and an interesting story for an all around great read.

New Avengers Marvel Salutes the U.S. Military Vol 1 2

After the quality story of the first one, I was anxious to read the second when I saw it. This one, I must say, was a disappointment. The Fantastic Four are back (the DVD was about to come out), but not really neccessary this time. Captain America sends the team, and other heroes, on a goodwill mission to visit the troops around the world and deliver supplies. There is a funny sub-plot with a couple heroes giving the Sentry wrong directions. Meanwhile, the Kingpin has hired some crazy Soviet reject from the Cold War to break into AAFES vault and steal their millions. But the Soviet guy is just a ruse, because all the banking is done electronically. This plot just had me rolling my eyes. It was too silly for me, even in an AAFES give-away b…

New Avengers Marvel Salutes the U.S. Military Vol 1 1

Normally, one-shot stories, especially out-of-continuity give-away specials like these, pretty much suck. They may have a good premise, but not enough pages to really tell a good story, and the story they tell has far too many characters crammed into it. This is an exception to that rule. I'm sure the Fantastic Four were included because this issue was released just prior to their movie going to theaters (you'll notice a pattern here), but they serve the story well. The story has the US Army stumbling upon an ancient spacecraft buried in a Louisiana swamp. They call in the Avengers and FF to investigate. While it's not neccessarily a classic, the story is very well written and the art is also very good. For a give-away issue, I find this o…

Horrors, Surfers, and Spider-Women

I've been a busy guy the last little while, I'm sure some have noticed that my updates have been a little sparse of late. Well, what may come as a surprise is that this fellow writer has been having an active social calendar as late. Winter is over, spring is in the air, and there is much beer to drink and women to romance... Or at least hang-overs to be dolled out the next day. So I've been a little preoccupied.
Not surprisingly though, on the other hand, I've kind of detoured off my original game plan of coming updates. During the last couple of weeks I had the chance to get through the third volume of Brave and the Bold Batman Team-Ups, Hawkman Vol 1, AND Marvel Horror Vol 2. Not to mention going back and doing the 7th volume of Fantast…

June 2009 comics!

Marvel released its June 2009 solicitations. I thought it might be fun to check out the trades that are coming out, since that's how I read my comics. Maybe I'll make it a monthly feature for fun. We'll see if I get a response. I'm not talking about every book, so check out the link above if you have something to say about a book I didn't mention. They also have the monthlies if you're not a trade fan. Whatever, I'm just trying to host a chat about comics and help build a community.

Exiles 47 Review by Peteparker

While I think Namora's back-story is a little interesting, the art of this comic is really distracting from the story. Everyone looks a bit bloated.

I guess they can't all be blow-out fights with Hyperion. . . :(

Lo, There Shall Be an Ending (or How I went through the first 180 odd Amazing Spider-Man stories and kept my sanity)

Since I tasked myself with writing summaries to every comic book that I have at my disposal at the Marvel and DC Wikis, I usually had the benefit of having breaks between different titles that I was doing. You know, as I continue to collect Essential and Showcase Presents books, I'd do a book of Adam Strange, then flip over to Marvel and do some Ant Man. It wasn't very often that I'd do long runs of any particular title. To date, I think the biggest number I had gone through was the first six volumes of Fantastic Four... So I've hit a milestone today, I've finished going through the fist EIGHT Spider-Man essentials. Covering Amazing Spider-Man #1 to 183 (Plus related annuals, giant-sizes and cross over issues) It was daunting to go through…

Wall-Crawlin' Up The Walls (Or another bunch of musings about Spider-Man)

  • sigh* Five volumes of Essential Spider-Man down three more to go. And what prospects. I'm getting to realm where Stan Lee's run on the series is about up, and there by into some dark waters. Seriously, once you get past the death of Gwen Stacy (a classic Spider-Man tale... And as an aside if there's one smart decision they made with the whole assenine Brand New Day storyline, it was keeping Gwen Stacy dead.) The stories that are featured in the next sixty or so issues of Amazing Spider-Man are.... well... less than desirable.

I'm cringing at the prospects, while there are some milestones in the bunch (Like Harry Osborn becoming the Green Goblin, and Peter's rekindled romance with Mary Jane, the first appearance of the Punisher etc.) there i…

Buggin' for Spider-Man

So recently I've been going through and updating Wiki summaries for Amazing Spider-Man, because I've got the first... Oh I don't know.... 10+ years of the series in trade format, and it was next on my list. Anyway, this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's been a long time reader of the ol' web-slinger, there is a LOT of continuity with Spider-Man. Tons of the stuff.
Go figure that Marvel's most iconic character is going to have a HUGE supporting cast, but it's there. And *MAN* is there a lot of stuff to watch out for, characters appearing in each issue alone is the hardest part.
That's because they've gone back and retconned so much stuff about Spider-Man's past, pretty much anyone who's appeared in a Spider-Man book can get a full arti…

Gods in the MU

I take it this is sort of a open message post for everyone. Okay, in case some of you hadn't noticed, I was starting a lot of the bios for those gods to appear in the MU, bios I would finish later as I caught up, but two things have hampered that: one, several of those bios have been shrunk down, preventing updates, two: I've been told that real world mythology does not apply in the MU (and if you've seen the skewering and artistic license in the handbooks, you'll know what I mean). Therefore, I have no idea what applies and what doesn't apply anymore. If anyone wants to pick up where I left off by moving what probably works from my site to the database, go for it! Help me! (Well, sort of)

So I run an art blog where I draw a Marvel character... every other/few days (schedule/laziness permitting). So far it's going good, but I'm always at a loss for characters to draw.

Here it is, by the way: http://oldgalskuttlebutt.blogspot.com/

If anyone has any suggestions (alternate timelines count), feel free to suggest away! The more 'out there' (for my style, anyways), the better. I just think Marvel has such a diverse array of characters, they'd be fun to render.

But that's just me, of course.

Well, it looks like I have a new "project" now: tagging/updating a lot of the images I've uploaded with the new image rule stuff.

Now don't think I'm being a whiner about it. I think it's great. The more specifics, the better (because I often see an image and wonder where it came from). I just... have a ton of images to go through! Waah!(I guess since my hours at work have been cut back for the remainder of the month and all, I shouldn't have trouble trying to find the time to update everything)

Well, considering I'm not as much of a heavy duty editor or a massive knowledge bank like others here are, I suppose I should do whatever I can to pull my weight and be helpful around here. Heh heh.

Phillipino Super-Team: Triumph Division

So the internets are a-buzz with talk of the inception and subsequent destruction of Marvel's first Filipino Super-Team. Anyone else feel shorted by their immediate deaths?

Not that I'm all that upset about it, or that I don't fully expect them all to be back in a matter of months due to fan-boy demand, but I'd say it's fairly rare to introduce an entire team and kill them immediately. And a team that a lot of people seemed to love right away at that.

Far be it from me to criticize this team or its implementation, but I've heard from others on the interwebs that there are problems with the way the Filipino people were depicted.

  1. Skin color was a bit dark for typical Filipinos.
  2. Most people were clothed in robes in Manila, and white ones at tha…

Make Mine Marvel in 2009!

Passing another Marvel era. We have the ability to blog about random schtick and actually get away with it nowadays. That being said, I would like to take this time to thank each and EVERY one of the editors/contributors/viewers/staff - EVERYONE for making a site and medium that we can do this.

This 2009 will be a year of extreme growth and wealth of knowledge for the site. Now that some of us have gotten our bots working again on the site, things will change dramatically and we can move forward on a lot of the projects that were put on the back-burner for some time. This means that Peteparker doesn't have to take the brunt of the work 'round here. It also means that you (anyone with the ability to read this) need to share your thoughts/ran…

Continuity!!! Marvel, why have you forsaken me?!? - Rant

Okay, I have always been one of those people to give someone the benefit of the doubt. Once, twice, even three times. It seems, however, that Marvel has created an epidemic of gigantic proportions and unleashed it upon those of us willing to shell out a few bucks (or hundreds) a month to catch up on the new happenings of our favorite books. This seemingly unstoppable plague is none other than a lack of continuity of storylines.

I somewhat expect that a character that I read in one story will at least "appear" to be the same character in another book. This makes it VERY difficult for one to distinguish that the person they are reading about is that same character they know and love. It seems that Marvel has taken a lot of us for mindless rea…

Epic Fail.

So over at Marvel's website, one of the free-for-all comics is Thor #337. Yay, I thought, this is perfect to show my friends who missed out on the Photobucket spree from 2 years ago!

But then I looked at it.

And I felt RAGE take over.

Seriously, whoever colors these things needs to either have a good lesson in HOW TO PROPERLY COLOR CHARACTERS or be slapped silly. Everything's too bright and overuse of magenta and purple. I likes me some purples and magentas, but that's overdoing it. And some spots are too pastel-y.

And then I saw this eyesore:

But seriously...

Having gotten a bit of fun out of the way, I figure I may as well make an "introduction" in earnest, since I just kinda snuck my way on here.

I've actually been into comics since 2006. Before that, it was mostly on/off passing knowledge of Marvel stuff in general, due in part to my love of the 90's X-Men cartoon (which doesn't hold up well over time, unsurprisingly enough) and my zealous fannishness of anything Jean Grey related. I never really liked DC outside of their cartoons, but that's neither here nor there.

To make a long story short, I came across a picture of a Beta Ray Bill action figure in a magazine one day and thought he looked cool enough to draw. I didn't know who he was or anything like that, so I did some internet research t…

New blog feature

Hi guys -- we just launched a brand-new feature called blogs, and we voted to try it out on this wiki on the forums!

Blogs are a new type of article with a single author -- it's a way to express yourself on the wiki without worrying that other people will edit what you write. You can use blogs to write opinions, fan fiction, community announcements, top 10 lists, questions -- anything that you want to write, but that wouldn't fit on a regular wiki article.

Admins can edit or delete blog posts and comments, so you can still guard against vandalism and make sure that everybody is using blogs the way that the community wants.

You can add blog posts to the regular categories that exist on the wiki, or create new categories for them. I'm going to …
