History
Brandon Forsythe was a crooked businessman who had been responsible for ruining a number of businesses in the past.[1] Arnold Crang knew that Forsythe had robbed him but couldn't prove it.[2]
For some unexplained reason, ruining Crang caused Forsythe's subconscious mind to feel regret or guilt over his past actions. As a result, Forsythe began experiencing a recurring dream in which he was confronted by a grey-robed figure bound in heavy chains. Although the haunting figure just stared at him, its presence made Forsythe feel terrified and he began to dread falling asleep. Desperate for help, Forsythe went to Doctor Strange who agreed to find the answer to his dream by entering it.
That night, after Forsythe fell asleep and began to dream, Strange's astral spirit entered his dream and confronted the bound figure when it appeared, demanding to know what it was and why it was tormenting Forsythe. The figure revealed that Forsythe well knew the reason why because it was the symbol of the evil that Forsythe had done and that was why it was chained. The figure then told Strange that if he did not believe, he should ask Mr. Crang.
At that moment, Nightmare arrived to confront Strange and Forsythe woke up. Remembering that the figure had mentioned Crang and realizing that Strange must have heard that name, Forsythe decided that Strange couldn't be allowed to live with what he had learned. After getting his gun, Forsythe prepared to shoot Strange while he was still in his trance but was stopped before he could fire by the Ancient One who remotely activated Strange's Amulet of Agamotto, causing it to emit a blinding hypnotic ray that paralyzed Forsythe long enough for Strange's astral self to escape from the Dream Dimension, reunite with his physical body and disarm Forsythe. Once freed from the hypnotic spell, Forsythe admitted that his dream had been caused by the many men he had ruined in business, the last of whom had been Crang. Forsythe then stated that he would confess and Doctor Strange told him that doing so was the only way he would ever sleep again.[2]
Forsythe did make an unsolicited confession of illegal business tactics and was convicted. This story was one of many that Strange later told to his friend Morgana Blessing. Later still, after Strange had faked his death, Morgana, who was unaware that he was still alive, felt that it was wrong that so few people knew how much her friend had done for humankind so she wrote a biography which revealed a lot of information about his past exploits, including his encounter with Forsythe.[1]See Also
