History

In this universe, Brian O'Brien was the first costumed hero, making his debut as The Clock in 1938.[1] In the WWII ea, The Clock became friends with Night Mask and Miss Fury I, having some adventures with them.[2] With the advent of super-powered heroes and the attack on Pearl Harbor,[1][3] he decided to give up crime-fighting, choosing instead to join the army and rose through the ranks.

In 1986, a Supranormal conflict devastated the town of Brinkston, Virginia, with the world presuming the Brinkston citizens and Supranormal villains were killed in the blast.[4][1] The American public blamed not only the Supranormal heroes but also the then-current administration as well. This dissatisfaction allowed O'Brien to run for office as an Independent candidate in 1988 and win the Presidency. While in office, he prepared plans for Project: Golden Age in case the world needed the help of the Supranormal heroes once again, enlisting the help of Philip Reinhart, the former Night Mask. After Mr. Monday and his Steel Army attacked Washington D.C., President O'Brien put the plan into motion and The Protectors was formed.

Notes

  • Based on the original Golden Age Clock, created by George Brenner. The Golden Age version first appeared in Funny Pages #6 (1936) published by Centaur Publications. The character then went to Quality Comics from Feature Funnies #3 (1937). The Malibu version use the history of both Centaur and Quality periods. Although the Clock made his comics debut in 1936, on Earth-1136, Brian O'Brien became the Clock in 1938, instead.[1] More information on the Golden Age Clock can be found in the DC database page: Brian O'Brien.

Trivia

  • In the "Informal History of the Protectors" from the Protectors Handbook, The Clock is described as wearing a "satin mask" and carrying a "gold-handled cane." This may have been based on the Clock's depiction in Funny Picture Stories #1.[5] Protectors #11 showed the Clock still used a cane as his weapon, and changed his look by 1941 to a domino mask instead of a satin mask, which the Quality Comics version of The Clock did switch to in Crack Comics #22.[6] However, in most of the comics published by Centaur and Quality, The Clock is usually shown carrying a gun.[7]
