History

Dr. Bruce Banner was involved in experiments on mutants for the government.

During an experiment to sterilize mutants, one of the prisoners panicked and caused the device to explode. This incident transformed him into the Hulk.

Right after his transformation, he killed his colleagues and his fiancée and that has caused him to harbor an extreme hatred of mutants.

In truth, his role in the Avengers was as a contingency plan should they fail in their mission. He was killed by Redback while attempting to deliver a chemical bomb to Fortress X.
