History
Bryan Hoskins was a scientist who, along with his colleague Professor Lister, was invited to travel by a Martian scientist, Professor Xyk, to the planet Mars with his spaceship. Once they reached Mars, a scientific discussion began where Hoskins declared that if he could raise a Martian child on Earth, he could make him a perfect Earthman, something that Lister did not believe possible. At that point Professor Xyk said that he could try by giving him up for adoption a Martian orphan, and so he did. Hoskins took the newborn to Earth, and before giving him up for adoption to an Earth family, he gave him a treatment to change his skin pigmentation, from green to Caucasian, then he instructed the baby's governess to find him a family, which she did. Years later, a student, Chip Ladby, discovered, peeking into the doctor's archive, the document relating to the experiment and became convinced that the Martian was his rival in love, Stephen Dowell, of whom he was envious for his successes in athletics and for being engaged to Louise Wharton, the girl he loved. Convinced that he could use the document to reveal Stephen's true nature, Doctor Hoskins asked him if he was sure that the Martian was Stephen since he himself was adopted. Frightened by this, for fear that they would discover that he was an alien, Chip left town. Days later, Dr. Hoskins attended Stephen and Louise's wedding, and thought to himself about what Chip had discovered, but that in reality the Martian was Louise.[1]
