History
Early Life[]
Cadmus was the son of King of Phoenicia. According to legend, when Cadmus's sister Europa was abducted by Zeus in the form of a bull. His father instructed Cadmus to search for Europa and not to return without her. During his quest, Cadmus consulted the oracle of Delphi for guidance. The oracle advised him to abandon his search for Europa and instead follow a cow and found a city where the cow would lie down. Cadmus followed the cow and eventually came to a place, where the cow laid down, there, he decided to establish a city.[3][1]
Founding Thebes[]
As Cadmus sought to build the city of Thebes, he encountered an obstacle: Drakon Ismenios the former serpentine guardian of the Golden Fleece. Following Athena's counsel, Cadmus slayed the dragon. Afterward, Athena instructed him to sow the dragon's teeth in the ground. From these teeth sprang up fully armed warriors, the Spartoi ("sown men"). They fought among themselves until only five survived, who became the ancestors of noble families in Thebes.[3][4]
Later Life[]
Additionally, he later married Harmonia, the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite, and their wedding was attended by the gods. They had a daughter named Semele, who was seduced by Zeus. The union produced a child, Dionysus the god of wine.[5][2]See Also
