History
Early Life[]
In 1885, Caleb was studying to become a minister when his wife, Thea, was tragically murdered by a drunken soldier who mistook her for his lover. This event shattered Caleb's faith. After abandoning his theological studies, Caleb became an agent for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. [1]
Pinkerton Detective Agency[]
Later that year, Caleb, along with Pinkerton agents Drew Watson and Jed McCabe, pursued the outlaw Kid Colt to Anaconda, Montana. Finding Colt alongside Reno Jones, Marcel Fournier, and the Rawhide Kid, Caleb hesitated to engage, promising to pursue Colt another time. Colt, however, killed both Pinkerton agents and fled with the outlaws.[2] Tracking Colt to the town of Wonderment, Caleb encountered the Nightriders, a group of hired men terrorising the townspeople. Captured by the Nightriders, Caleb and the bounty hunter Gunhawk were pitted against one another by Kid Cassidy, the Nightriders' leader. Before they could duel, Reno Jones, disguised as the Ghost Rider, intervened, scattering the Nightriders. Caleb and Gunhawk then escaped to Wonderment.[3] In Wonderment, Caleb and Gunhawk resolved to bring Colt to justice after dealing with the Nightriders. They joined forces to defeat the gang, but as victory neared, Gunhawk shot Colt in the back. Outraged by this dishonourable act, Caleb shot Gunhawk dead. Following the burial of Kid Colt, the Outlaw Kid, and the Two-Gun Kid, Caleb departed with the Rawhide Kid, reflecting on his actions.[4]
On May 3, 1886, Caleb visited his brother Issak in Chicago during a strike at the McCormick harvesting machine factory. Attempting to prevent scabs from crossing the picket lines, Caleb became embroiled in violence when riot police intervened, resulting in six deaths, including Issak's.[1]
In 1888, Caleb tracked Arthur Penfield to a cabin in Montana, where he shot Penfield in the shoulder after being threatened. Snowed in for five months, Caleb and Penfield coexisted while awaiting the weather to clear.[1]
In 1890, Caleb accepted a mission to apprehend former soldiers Crawford McKie and Jake Lovelace, who were exploiting their reputations to terrorise small towns and commit murder. Caleb followed their trail to Manacle, Wyoming, where he subdued a local troublemaker, Luke Sommers, first by punching him and later by destroying his gun. Caleb survived an explosive booby trap set by the fugitives and eventually cornered McKie and Lovelace at a cabin on a cliff known as "the Devil’s Anvil." Using their superstitions against them, Caleb created a terrifying silhouette in the moonlight. Amid the chaos, an epileptic child held hostage by the fugitives had a seizure, prompting the panicked men to kill the child. Enraged, Caleb stormed the cabin and subdued both men with his bare hands.[1]
Death[]
Near the end of the 19th century, Caleb was confronted in a small Wyoming town by the External Absalom, who sought to defeat him in combat. When Caleb refused, Absalom shot him in the back, killing him. Absalom was later hanged for Caleb’s murder, though his mutant abilities manifested during the execution.[5] In 1896, the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle reported Caleb’s death, attributing it to being shot in the back after declining a challenge from the outlaw Corey Flynn.[6]Attributes
