This person was a professionally successful African-American musician, composer, and conductor, living in New York City. The Daily Bugle included him in a list of ten most successful black people in the city. This list attracted the attention of Ugandan criminal Kinji Obatu, who used the enslaved vampire Nightspawn to kidnap all the people in that list, then had them fly to Africa in an airplane from Long Island. Obatu planned to deliver his prisoners to the President of Uganda in exchange for a pardon for his crimes and a reward, and have his houngan (voodoo witch-doctor) ally W'Sulli enslave Wadsworth and the others using the same technique he had used on the Nightspawn.[1] Obatu sent the Nigthspawn to the Carnegie Hall, where Wadsworth was rehearsing - and giving a free-of-charge performance to the building's staff because he was altruistic. The Nightspawn attacked, and Wadsworth understood it was a vampire. SWuperhero Black Panther arrived, trying to protect Wadsworth, later joined by the Thing. Wadsworth impaled the Ngihtspawn from behind using a wooden boy, eliminating the threat for the time being. However, some time later, the Nightspawn reformed,[1] and captured Wadsworth, the Panther, and the other people in the list. Obatu did take the prisoners to Kampala and had W'Sulli perform a mind-controlling ceremony in front of the President.[1]
However, the Thing and his new ally Brother Voodoo followed Obatu's trail and attacked the government building the mind-controlled prisoners were at. At Brother Voodoo's request, the Thing broke the "govi" (sacred urn) that was necessary to control the prisoners' mind, releasing Wadsworth - and also releasing the Nightspawn, who attacked and killed W'Sulli and Obatu in punishment for having enslaved him, then escaped. The Thing and his allies took care of returning Wadsworth and the other prisoners to the United States, correctly deducing that the Ugandan government would not try to attract attention to the event, lest they'd have to explain about the kidnapping of American citizens.[1]
