Synopsis for "Part One - Born on the 4th of July"

While Jeff Mace, reporter for the Daily Bugle is covering a story he assists Captain America in taking down a nazi spy. Captain America thanks Jeff for his aid and calls him a true Patriot. After this incident Jeff was inspired by Captain America and became the Patriot while still continuing to work for the Daily Bugle. As the Patriot, Jeff would stop saboteurs and killers then afterwards he would write stories featuring the Patriot. Jeff was soon dealing with so many incidents that his co-worker Mary Morgan also began writing about the Patriots super hero exploits.

Jeff would go on to join the superhero team the Liberty Legion a group formed to prevent subterfuge on the homeland while the Invaders were off fighting across the ocean. The team was comprised of the Patriot, Miss America, Jack Frost, Whizzer, Blue Diamond, Thin Man, and Red Raven. Together the team thwarted many plots and after a while Mary Morgan met up with Jeff again to try and join the team and perhaps spark up a romanced between the two after a failed kidnapping left her with superpowers. Mary even picked out the name Miss Patriot. Jeff declined afraid that juggling the War, the Legion, and pretending to be a reporter was about all he could handle. Jeff was still open to the occasional team-up however. A few months later and with the Nazi threat diminishing Miss America broke the news that part of the Legion would be folding into the Invaders in order to crush them and end the war while he would most likely remain behind due to the confusing nature of sharing a team with Captain America. Jeff was disappointed by the news but understood.

Two months later Jeff heard about a fire at the home of Dr. Hortons on a police radio and decided to investigate. While there he met up with the All-Winners. Captain America, Bucky, Miss America, Human Torch, Whizzer, and the Sub-Mariner together they pushed further to the fire and discovered it was an attack by some mechanical men. Jeff not being the fastest of the group was a bit behind and decided to scout on top of a nearby church. What he found was the body of Captain America, who was barely alive. Jeff took him to the All-Winners ship in an effort to find him medical help but when he got their Captain America was only able to gasp out his name before dying. Not wanting to demoralize the team, Jeff put on the costume and continued the mission as Captain America.

Some time later after the mission Jeff was held by the FBI and questioned about the mission. They informed him that the Captain America that died, William Naslund, wasn't the first and that a legend can't die before offering him the role as the next Captain America. Jeff accepted the role but exclaimed that while there can only be one Captain America he would be honored to carry on his name by using his name even if he could never live up to the man himself.
