Synopsis for 1st story

The story opens with Steve Rogers attempting to contact Bucky Barnes, having not heard from him for three days since the Fourth of July attack. He remains troubled by the dying words of the new Destroyer, who claimed that the symbol on Captain America's shield belongs to a mysterious group. While his WWII-era allies in the "Radio Company" continue to intercept cryptic messages, Steve's new friend, David, uses his tech skills to uncover a name connected to the shield's creation: Dr. David Agboje, who was responsible for its "alloy finishing".

A new lead emerges when Steve's young neighbor, Amari, mentions a revolutionary green-energy power plant in Germany called "The Forge". Realizing this is the next target mentioned in the coded broadcasts, Captain America travels to the remote facility. There, he confronts a group of hostiles whose uniforms and tactics are a composite of various organizations he's fought, including HYDRA, The Hand, and A.I.M.. He is shocked to recognize former allies, including S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, among the attackers, realizing this new enemy is drawing soldiers from all sides of his past conflicts.

As the battle rages, a massive structure in the shape of the shield's star symbol arises from the ground. A shadowy council remotely authorizes a "redaction". A powerful, metallic being is launched from the structure and engages Captain America in a fierce fight.

Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes has traveled to Madripoor on his own investigation. He confronts a mysterious woman, whom he identifies as Peggy Carter, at a high-stakes baccarat game. Bucky speaks of an ancient war involving "five soldiers, five points of a star" and tells Peggy that she is one of them. The issue ends with Bucky questioning her true allegiance and asking who she really works for.

Solicit Synopsis

Steve Rogers follows a trail of coded breadcrumbs to Germany, where an elusive organization is making bold and deadly moves, while Bucky Barnes' own investigation leads him to the high rollers tables in Madripoor. Thousands of miles apart with no backup, will Steve and Bucky find what they're looking for, or are they both in over their heads?

Notes

  • In the final page, under the cover for the next issue, there's a code that reads "WNJG G RGWG DJJSCJI G ODGM". It means "When a Pawn becomes a King", possibly referencing the fact both Steve and Bucky had their lifes manipulated by the Outer Circle, but now want to take back control.
